The Southern California Library, located in South Los Angeles, is partnering with Community Services Unlimited to offer a series of garden workshops that will provide local residents and other participants with an opportunity to build and apply their knowledge about gardening with native plants. The project is being undertaken in response to the local community?s need for welcoming public spaces in this underdeveloped section of the Vermont corridor, which is characterized by concrete sprawl and few cultural or green spaces?parks, bookstores, or even sit-down restaurants. As participants practice what they learn, they will in the process create a community green space in the heart of South Los Angeles that is an oasis of native herbs, flowers, and trees.
The workshops will take place on Saturday, April 29; Saturday, May 13; Saturday, June 17; and Saturday, July 15. All workshops will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Library, 6120 S. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles (between Slauson and Gage). Admission is free and lunch is provided. Please call (323) 759-6063, ext. 15, to RSVP. For more information, go to www.socallib.org.
