AFSC Invites You to Challenge the Media on Coverage of the Iraq War
Mourning the Death of a News Tradition - Stop Burying the Truth
On March 15, National Media Action Day, join the American Friends Service Committee and Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace in demanding better coverage of the war and the erosion of civil liberties.
At CBS 2 News in Hollywood, we will mourn the death of a great news tradition exemplified by CBS newscaster Edward R. Murrow, whose courageous stand for truth was recently portrayed in the film Good Night, and Good Luck. The protest will have a funereal theme, with a coffin and elegy, and protesters are encouraged to wear black or funeral attire.
Our message to CBS and the rest of the media establishment is simple—Uncover the Cover-up:
Verify—not just report—official statements of the administration and military on the war, including its initial justification and related issues such as torture and spying. Show the war and provide more accurate and in-depth coverage of the casualties—military and civilian—and other costs of war. Report on the local impact of the war—how money for community needs is going to the war budget. A delegation will request a meeting with editors from CBS.
Protesting Tips:
Assemble in front of CBS 2 News (Columbia Square) at 6121 Sunset Blvd., between Gower and El Centro Wear black or funeral attire Be respectful - news organizations need to understand why the truth is in everyone\'s best interest Some signs will be available Bring your own signs too, but please keep within our message and the points listed above
