IN MEMORY OF COMANDANTA RAMONA 1959-2006
Comandanta Ramona, the first member of the Clandestine Indigenous Revolutionary Comittee (CCRI), General Command of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN), passed away on January 6 of 2006 while going from Oventic to San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. She had been struggling with cancer for a long time and in 1996 received a kidney transplant which allowed her to live on. In the words of Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos, "The world has lost one of those women it requires. Mexico has lost one of the combative women it needs and we, we have lost a piece of our heart."
We invite those who do not forget about their dead to an event in memory of Comandanta Ramona. The event will take place on Monday, February 6 of 2006 in the Student Lounge at Saddleback College, starting at 6 pm. There will be a film-screening of "The Sixth Sun: Mayan Rebellion in Chiapas" (Introduction to the movement of the Zapatista National Liberation Army - EZLN). Coffee and honey from Zapatista cooperatives will be sold and childcare will be provided during the event.
