PAKISTAN'S EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS FACE HARSH WINTER
AWARE and Global Voices for Justice are co-sponsoring a special fundraiser with Hamid Khan of Pakistan and Mark O'Regan, a medical volunteer with Operation Heartbeat.
The Pakistan earthquake struck on October 8th at 9:00 a.m. collapsing a majority of structures. Reports estimate that the 7.9 magnitude quake killed 87,000 people, severely injured over 70,000, and left 3.5 million homeless or without food. There have been more than 1,500 aftershocks, some as severe as 5.1 (sources: UPI, Reuters).
A second wave of deaths is feared from landslides and the constant threat of hypothermia and disease. Only with sustained aid can the more than 3.5 million survivors make it through the winter.
Operation Heartbeat is an international group of physicians who donate surgery and medical treatment to those without access to healthcare. When Pakistan's devastating earthquake hit in early October, an Operation Heartbeat team went into the country's most isolated mountain areas of Kashmir. Doctors and other medical volunteers have been treating injuries ranging from hypothermia and broken bones to gangrenous wounds. They also assist with all the basic humanitarian efforts alongside the Pakistani army and volunteers from the U.S., Cuba, Switzerland, Turkey, and other countries.
Marc and Hamid will be sharing many beautiful and moving photos of the devastation, aid, and the amazing Pakistani survivors.
The fundraiser will be held at Viento y Agua Gallery & Coffeeshop on Saturday, February 4th, at 6:00 p.m., opening with a powerfully healing Tibetan bell meditation. Los Angeles area musicians and poets will be performing throughout the evening until 10:00 p.m., and the presentation by Hamid and Marc will begin at 6:45 p.m. Several artists are donating original work for silent auction (all proceeds to be donated). Come and enjoy an evening of music and poetry, purchase original artwork, and support Pakistan earthquake relief.
The gallery has generously offered their space to us for the evening, and the coffeeshop is donating 10 percent of proceeds on all of their delicious food or beverage items purchased during the event.
