Directed by Jeff Zimbalist, ‘Favela Rising’ shows the reality of many Brazilians,as it follows the life of Anderson Sá, a favela resident who turns social activist in Rio de Janeiro’s suburbs, the favela Vigário Geral.
When cops massacred 21 innocent favela residents, including Anderson's brother and several close friends, he experiences a political awakening. He sees the influence music has with his peers, borrows instruments, and teaches himself how to play. His actions ignite a movement of revolutionary music and dance that is still spreading throughout the favelas of Brazil today. Rio de Janeiro’s traditional music has combined with the rhythms of the street as an expression of the struggle waged by youth to survive against the violent oppression of police brutality.
AfroReggae, the grassroots cultural movement founded by Sá and fellow activist José Junior, combines the sounds of hip-hop, street rhythms, and Afro-Brazilian themes. Don't miss this film!
