AWARE presents, ?Caught in the Crossfire,? a groundbreaking documentary filmed in Fallujah just after the November 2004 invasion. Produced in the heart of the combat zone by independent filmmaker, Mark Manning, this is a joint project with Iraqi filmmakers who want the true story of Iraqi civilians presented to the American people. Meet the filmmaker and see a 20-minute excerpt (full-length documentary available on DVD for sale at the event).
Proceeds from merchandise sales and donations will be used to bring humanitarian relief not only to Iraqi civilians, but also to indigenous Americans whose plight in the wake of two devastating hurricanes has fallen through the cracks of government red tape. Members of many Native American nations have received no aid from FEMA or the Red Cross and have had to organize their own relief efforts. Many donations have already come in, but money is desperately needed to transport goods to the thousands left homeless after the storms. A donation is requested.
This special fundraiser will also feature a silent auction to help raise money with art, photography, and other items for sale. Music by Chase Frank, MajicBulletTheory, and DJ Soul-O will be provided until 10pm.
The mission of AWARE is to raise consciousness through art, music and spoken word, and to promote peace and justice through coalitions with other organizations. AWARE takes an unconventional approach to the peace movement, incorporating live music, poetry and artwork to blend culture with education. Talented artists entertain you with jazz, hip-hop, poetry and art while you enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and learn about current socio-political events that impact your life.
Tables of literature from other organizations are available to inform you of opportunities to become involved. Affiliates include Viento Y Agua Gallery, Addicted to War, Afghan Women?s Mission, A.N.S.W.E.R., Codepink, Global Voices for Justice, Veterans for Peace, and others.
