Young people from South Los Angeles will present original poetry and theater at a special event on Saturday, August 20. The event is the culmination of poetry and Theater of Oppression workshops where youth developed and shared creative work about what it is like to grow up in South L.A. in their own voices. The event will take place at the Southern California Library, 6120 S. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, at 2 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments will be offered. All are welcome. For more information, call 323-759-6063 or check the web at www.socallib.org.
Listening for a Change
Youth in South L.A. are too often characterized in a negative light, as adding little value to our communities. Adults, in turn, come up with solutions to challenges that youth face, but how often do we listen to what youth have to say? This event provides an opportunity to hear youth speak for themselves through creative expression. It is part of the Library?s South L.A. project, ?From Generation to Generation: Making Things Better in South L.A.,? which invites people to ?listen for a change,? engaging residents and others in defining and responding to community conditions. Part of the California Council for the Humanities? ?Communities Speak,? program, the ?Generations? project is funded by the CCH and the California Community Foundation.
The Library is a social justice people?s library located in South Los Angeles. The Library was founded over 40 years ago and is dedicated to education for social change. For more information about the Library or the event, go to www.socallib.org or call (323) 759-6063.
