Sheila Provencher, an American citizen who has spent the last year-and-a-half doing humanitarian work in Iraq as a member of Christian Peacemaker Teams, will speak about her experiences as a nonviolent activist in Baghdad. Sheila has worked extensively with family members of those detained by Coalition forces, and she raised concerns about prisoner abuse months before the Abu Ghraib scandal broke internationally. Sheila has traveled to many conflict-ravaged zones of the country, including Sadr City; Abu Ghraib prison; Baghdad International Airport; and most recently Fallujah, where she helped with cleanup months after the Coalition assault. She has also participated in the training of the brand-new Muslim Peacemaker Team, an effort to bring Shi'a and Sunni Muslims together to nonviolently work for justice.
Sheila's writings have appeared in the magazines America and The Sign of Peace, and she has been interviewed for pieces for Chicago Public Radio, The Boston Globe, The Sunday Times (London), and The Stanford Daily, among others.
This event is free and open to the public.
