Richard Heinberg, author of the important recent books The Party's Over: Energy Resources and the Fate of Industrial Societies, and PowerDown: Options and Actions for a Post Carbon World, will speak on the frightening and far-reaching implications of Peak Oil.
Heinberg is a knowledgeable and accessible speaker, and anyone concerned about making a sustainable world really should attend! Peak oil is happening now (2005-2010). (This contrasts with the Official US government estimates which place the peak around 2035. )
In The Party's Over, Heinberg explains why the problem with oil does not begin when we run out, but when we have used up half of global reserves. Once this halfway mark has been reached ("Hubbert's Peak"), intensifying competition, runaway energy prices, and social-political turmoil, are inevitable.
