SPOKEN WORD PERFORMANCE ART/EXHIBIT CLOSING RECEPTION HIGHLIGHTS EXPERIENCE OF BEING A BLACK WOMAN IN L.A. TODAY
ARTIST JAHA ZAINABU PERFORMS HER POWERFUL PIECE JOURNEY, SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 2 P.M. AT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LIBRARY
Well-known spoken word artist Jaha Zainabu will perform her one-woman show Journey?part poem, part theater, part dynamic dialogue with those who come to share it with her?in an event at the Southern California Library, Saturday, June 4, 2?4:30 p.m. Journey illuminates the experience of being a Black woman in Los Angeles today, exposing issues of race and gender. Zainabu?s companion visual art exhibit, also titled Journey, is currently on display at the Library with individual works available for purchase until that time. The Library is located at 6120 S. Zainabu is a spoken word, literary, and visual artist from Long Beach, California. She has performed across the nation on a variety of stages. She has two CDs, Journey and Unmasked. Her collection of written poetry entitled The Science of Chocolate Milk Making is forthcoming shortly. Zainabu was a cast member of The Vagina Monologues and has toured with the nationally touring Underground Poets Railroad. Zainabu uses her gift of storytelling to educate, enlighten, and entertain and is a motivational speaker in middle schools, high schools, and college, giving workshops such as ?Finding Your It.?
The June 4 event will also feature a reception for the closing of Zainabu?s exhibit at the Library. The public is welcome to view and purchase individual works (a sampling of which can be seen on the web at www. socallib.org) until that time and at the event, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Library, a 42-year-old social justice institution located in South Los Angeles.
