The Enemy A timely and important documentary on the unequal relationship between the United States and the Philippines since the U.S. occupied the latter a century ago. The film also tackles U.S. occupation of other countries like Iraq. Produced by the Southern Tagalog Exposure, a center for progressive media in the Philippines. The film is narrated in English. Two special guests, Marie Hilao-Enriquez and Larry Everest, will speak during at the event, please read below for their bios. ** suggested donation but no one turned away for lack of funds. Light refreshments and snacks will be served. ** Marie Hilao-Enriquez of KARAPATAN in the Philippines, has been an activist since her youth. She organized students and farmers in the provinces and played a crucial role along with thousands of youth who went underground during martial law in the struggle against the Marcos dictatorship during the 1970s and 1980s. She is currently the general secretary of KARAPATAN or the Alliance for the Advancement of Peoples' Rights. KARAPATAN is responsible for documenting human rights violations in the Philippines and submits findings and urges legislative bodies to open up inquiries and investigations into cases of human rights violations. It also campaigns for the release of political prisoners and intervenes in the court hearings of their cases. Larry Everest is the author of "Oil, Power, & Empire: Iraq and the U.S. Global Agenda." He is a correspondent for the Revolutionary Worker newspaper and author of "Behind the Poison Cloud: Union Carbide's Bhopal Massacre." He has reported from Iran, the West Bank, Gaza, India, and Iraq, and his articles have appeared in publications across the U.S. In 1991 he traveled to Iraq and shot the video "Iraq: War Against the People." He currently lives in Berkeley, California. He will be available at the end of the event to sell and sign his most recent book "Oil, Power, & Empire: Iraq and the U.S. Global Agenda."
