{We are currently still accepting submissions for First Issue}
First Issue, the first in a series of events promoting the political voice of young people, is an impressive collection of ‘youth art with a message’. The art expresses the current political and social values for LA Youth in post September 11th America. The exhibit comes at an opportune time for Los Angelenos who currently face such a rapidly fluxuating and often tense political climate. The opening reception will be attended by City officials, teachers, students, educators, and politicians. The show will run at ICU Art gallery, at 5113 Pico Blvd., from October 12th through the 19th. The Opening reception, on October 12th from 5pm-9pm, features speakers that run the gamut of national and local issues, including representatives from the ACLU, the October 22nd Coalition against police brutality, and the LAPD.
First Issue was conceived by Come Un-Paused, the LA Youth Democracy Action Component of Common Cause, the national organization that has been working for thirty years to promote open, honest, and accountable government. Come Un-Paused surveyed Los Angeles young people to determine the issues of greatest daily concern to youth. The individuals surveyed determined the issues of greatest impact on their everyday lives to be issues surrounding the LAPD, prisons, and fair labor. Come Un-Paused’s current focus is on developing nonpartisan events that educate and empower constituents of Los Angeles around these issues and others relevant to ensuring our government is indeed ‘by the people and for the people.’ Join us on October 12th for this very important event.
