Dear Friends,
This coming Saturday, September 21, at 12:30 pm the October 22nd Coalition will hold an important planning meeting at Faith United Methodist Community Church.
October 22nd Coalition Planning Meeting Saturday, September 21, 2002 12:30pm (sharp) to 3:30pm Faith United Methodist Community Church 1713 W. 108th (1/2 block east of Western)
In one month from now, the 7th annual National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation will occur in Downtown LA and in many other cities across the country.
Our national demonstrations to stop police brutality will happen in the context of an increasingly repressive atmosphere in the United States. Where law enforcement on both the local and national level has been given broad new powers and where laws and policies that drastically restrict civil liberties have been put into place. And, in a situation where the documented incidences of police murder since 9/11/01 have been escalating in many areas of the country.
At the same time, the movement to stop police brutality and the work to hold a successful October 22nd is gathering momentum. Here in Los Angeles, our coalition has been meeting regularly -- painting its collective vision for the national day of protest, planning the important work that will take us from here to "the Day," and sharing diverse experiences as we carry out this work.
We are at an important juncture now. The diversity and full breadth of organizational support for October 22nd needs to come more decisively "on board" to help enrich the vision for what "the Day" should be this year, and to assist in developing, and carrying through on, the final plans for accomplishing that vision.
On Saturday, September 21, 2002 we invite everyone who is opposed to injustice, all those concerned about building the movement to stop police brutality, repression and the criminalization of a generation to this important planning meeting.
To the family members of those killed by law enforcement; to survivors of police brutality and racial profiling; to the youth and students from the many high schools, colleges and communities; to organizational representatives from a range of political groups and battlefronts -- your participation is needed to make this the most powerful October 22nd National Day of Protest yet! See you all at the meeting.
Best Regards,
LA Office -- October 22nd Coalition 213-413-4755
