Journalist David Neiwert will be the featured speaker at the September informational meeting of Peace Works! in Temecula Valley on September 24, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Temecula United Methodist Church, and is a free event which is open to the public. The address is 42690 Margarita Road, Temecula, in meeting room #1.

David Neiwert is a journalist whose work has appeared in The Washington Post, Salon, and MSNBC.com. His latest book, "DEATH ON THE FOUR OF JULY: The Story of a Killing, a Trial, and Hate Crime in America" (Palgrave/MacMillan, ISBN 1-4039-6501-3), discusses hate crimes in a broad context as well as focusing on a particular July 4, 2000 incident in Ocean Shores, Washington.

Neiwert's book not only examines the case in question -- where an encounter between white skinheads and three young Asian American youths led to a death and murder charges -- but also about the ways hate crimes differ from other crimes as well as the effects they have on the community.

"I'm really pleased that David is able to address Peace Works! this month," said Kynn Bartlett, a member of the Peace Works! in Temecula Valley organizing committee. "As local groups such as Not In Our Valley and the school districts are dealing with hate crimes, it will be very helpful to hear David's perspective."

In addition to "Death on the Fourth of July," Neiwert is the author of "In God's Country: The Patriot Movement and the Pacific Northwest," (1999, WSU Press) and the forthcoming "Strawberry Days: The Rise and Fall of the Bellevue Japanese-American Community" (2005, Palgrave/St. Martin's Press). His blog "Orcinus" (http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/) regularly reports on hate movements, white supremacism, and proto-fascism in America.

Peace Works! in Temecula Valley is a local affiliate of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an international, interfaith organization dedicated to non-violence. We are the people of the Temecula Valley working together as members of the global community to recognize and honor diversity and support active, peaceful responses to local, regional, and world conflicts.
