The Dawn-Marie Wesley Story to be Told in RATS & BULLIES at the 7th Annual DANCES-WITH-FILMS
Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) May 17, 2004 -- While MEAN GIRLS, a new release by Paramount Pictures, shows the comedic side of teen female relational aggression and cliques, the new Documentary Film RATS & BULLIES from R&R Media Productions, explores the dark side of female bullying, as told through the tragic true story involving ?real? mean girls.
RATS & BULLIES is an OFFICIAL SELECTION of the the Seventh Annual DANCES-WITH-FILMS FILM FESTIVAL in Los Angeles/Santa Monica, which takes place from June 10th through the 17th.
Called ?the defiant fest of raw talent? by the Hollywood Reporter, DANCES-WITH-FILMS has earned a reputation for its particular preference in honoring only the truest forms of independent cinema. Many consider DANCES-WITH-FILMS to be one of the most prestigious annual film festivals in Los Angeles.
Are you a bully? Have you ever been bullied? What face comes to mind when the word "bully" is mentioned? RATS & BULLIES explores the popular perceptions of what a bully is, and expands them.
At the age of 14, Dawn-Marie Wesley took her own life after experiencing a cycle of psychological abuse and verbal threats from three of her "closest" friends. In her suicide note, Dawn-Marie named the three girls, which sparked a police investigation that culminated in a precedent setting court case where the three bullies were made to stand trial for their actions. In the film, distinctions are made between the more well known types of bullying that males engage in, and the more subtle and psychologically damaging ways in which females bully.
In RATS & BULLIES you will journey to a small town in British Columbia, Canada, and hear first hand accounts from Dawn-Marie's family, her best friend, the Judge who presided over the landmark court case, a mother whose son was going to commit suicide due to bullying, the former Mayor of the town where the tragedy took place, one of the girl bullies who was prosecuted, and others.
RATS & BULLIES shows you not only the bullying events which led to Dawn-Marie's decision, but also the aftermath: the effect of this loss of life on the victim's family and friends, the community and even the accused. You will also learn of Restorative Justice and how Aboriginal Law played a poignant and powerful role in the punishment of one of Dawn-Marie's tormentors.
Also interviewed in the film is cofounder of the Empower Program and New York Times best-selling author of "QUEEN BEES AND WANNABES", Rosalind Wiseman.
You may have heard about Dawn-Marie Wesley's story on the radio, in the news media, or on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Only in RATS & BULLIES will you experience and learn of the entire tragedy and its aftermath.
