LA Weekly "Pick of the Week" Reviewed By Mart??n Hern??ndez
The U.S.???s current intervention in Iraq is the implied touchstone for playwright Steven Haworth???s fanciful allegory admonishing Americans that ???the evil ends with you.??? Bernadette Sullivan deftly portrays both Dora, a dispirited modern-day Kansas wife and mother, and Gertrude Bell, the formidable British archaeologist who, with T.E. Lawrence ??? a.k.a. Lawrence of Arabia (Bj??rn Johnson) ??? was instrumental in Britain???s imperialist creation of Iraq in 1921. As Dora sets off on an Oz-like search, under orders from a mysterious museum curator (understudy Madeline Dahm), for the Lost Tablet of Ur and its earth-shattering secret, Bell???s political and romantic machinations with King Faisal Hussein (David Ackert) are told in flashbacks that mirror Dora???s sojourn. Accompanying Dora to Mesopotamia and symbolizing the world???s major belief systems are a fundamentalist Christian (Yuriana Kim), a French-born Jewish archaeologist (Jay Edward Anthony), a beatific Muslim girl (Rainbow Underhill) and an American opportunist (Peter Breitmayer). From encounters with a tap-dancing donkey to a brutal Iranian torturer (both played by the sinuous Brian Frette, among other roles), directors Gleason Bauer and Jon Kellam, movement director Dahm and the able ensemble strike just the right balance between comedy, pathos and political critique.
