THIRD PARTY: POLITICAL ALTERNATIVES IN THE AGE OF DUOPOLY April 27 & 28, 4 showings
In a country diverse like no other on the planet, can the myriad shades of political preference be adequately represented by the two primary colors of the Democratic and Republican Parties? An increasing number of Americans are saying no.

Obsessing over pabulum rots the mind. Our national discourse on 'the issue of the day' is so utterly lacking in substance that it's more about distraction than meaningful debate. Forget how "fair and balanced" they claim it to be, the journalism of our mainstream, corporate media is as homogenized and narrow-minded as ever. At the same time, fortunately, we have more and more alternatives because of people with video cameras and the desire (and freedom) to investigate our world more thoroughly than a producer for Fox News. The documentaries in this series are immediate responses to scary times. It's cinema at its most democratic and relevant. The proliferation of festivals as outlets for all these independently produced films makes it possible for more people to make movies but their opportunity to bring these films to the public is still limited by corporate control of exhibition outlets. Festivals and independent exhibitors like Laemmle Theatres are the important link in the chain. The next link is an adventurous movie-going public.
