AN URGENT MESSAGE FROM THE NLG PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

February 20, 2004

Dear Members of the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild:

This is an urgent call for your support. As you know, for

the past couple of months the Los Angeles Chapter of the Lawyers

Guild has been deeply engaged in defending the grocery workers'

strike. We have done this in a variety of ways, including training

the picketers in militant and effective methods of picketing; walking

the line with the picketers; and interfacing with the police on

picket lines to defend the right of the picketers to picket within

the full scope of their rights in a labor dispute.

In the course of this work so far, three of our attorney

Board members have been arrested as a result of their efforts. Two of

the Board members arrested were arrested on two different times at a

picket line in Hermosa Beach. The Hermosa Beach police have been

particularly hostile to the strikers and have violated their rights

in numerous ways. While effectuating their most recent arrest of a

Board member, they referred to our member as "a piece of crap."

Historically, when the Lawyers Guild has been called to

defend the progressive movements for social, economic and political

change, Guild members have always answered the call. And we are still

firmly of the belief that an attack on one is an attack on all. So

now we are asking all members of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Guild

to answer this call to support those of us who have been arrested

while defending the strikers. And what we are asking of each member

is very simple: Come to the strikers' and Guild's picket line this

Wednesday, February 25 starting at 6:00 p.m., at the Von's located at

715 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach. Together we will demonstrate to the

Hermosa Beach Police Department that the Lawyers Guild not only knows

how to stand up for the strikers, but how to stand up for our own

members, as well!

Don't let your fellow members of the Chapter down! Join the

picket line in Hermosa Beach on February 25th. Give the Hermosa Beach

Police Department an example of solidarity in action!

Yours in Solidarity,

James Lafferty,

Executive Director

Carol Sobel,

President
