EMERGENCY ACTION ALERT

For the Los Angeles, CA - City Council Resolution against the USA PATRIOT Act, and related Executive Orders

File No. 03-0002-S162 Title USA PATRIOT ACT/REPEAL

www.cldc-la.org

Greetings, once again, Fellow Peace Activists,

I am writing today to give you an update on our efforts, and to thank all of you for taking action, by assisting the CLDC in successfully lobbying the Arts, Parks, Health and Aging Committee, who voted unanimously in favor of Councilwoman Jan Perry's Resolution against the USA PATRIOT Act. We also received word that the Rules Committee chose to by-pass their evaluation, and send the Resolution to the entire Los Angeles City Council for a FINAL VOTE.

What does this mean? It means the last leg of this particular journey has almost come to the end, and on Wednesday, January 21, 2004, we have the capacity of becoming the largest City in this Nation to pass such a resolution. As it stands, we now ?Technically? have the ?Eight Vote Majority? to pass this resolution, but we are NOT Guaranteed their votes. The eight council members are Jan Perry (District 9), Eric Garcetti (District 13), Ed Reyes (District 1), Tony Cardenas (District 6), Cindy Mischikowski (District 11), Tom LaBonge (District 4), Martin Ludlow (District 10), and the President of the City Council, Alex Padilla (District 7).

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

We ask that you put out an Emergency Action Alert to the members of your organization, business patrons, coworkers, family and friends requesting they telephone, write &/or fax their council person, asking them to support Councilwoman Jan Perry's Resolution (File No. 03-0002-S 162 Title USA PATRIOT ACT/REPEAL.) If their council member has already endorsed this resolution, please thank them for their support, and gently remind them to vote in favor of it. They can also go to www.cldc-la.org to sign the online petition and send an online letters of support to their council person, to find your council member go to www.lacity.org/council.htm. In addition to this, we ask that you join us in the Council Chambers at City Hall on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 - 11:00 A.M. to show your support, and to stand in solidarity with the Civil Liberties Defense Coalition.

If you have questions, please email me at jtkuwatani@aol.com or call 323.839.3917.

Thank you,

June T. Kuwatani
