In recent decades, students have been in the forefront of many diverse movements: anti-apartheid, anti-globalization, anti-sweatshop, pro-peace, pro-fair trade and pro-immigrant rights, among many, many others. Recently, students helped defeat Proposition 54 and walked the line for striking grocery workers.
On Thursday, January 15, CSULA alumnus Vik Chaubey will be giving a talk in the South Pasadena Room (4th floor, University-Student Union), titled "Student Movements in the 21st Century." The talk will be from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at the California State University at Los Angeles, 5151 State University Drive, near the intersection of the 10 and 710 freeways.
Chaubey was a student activist at Cal State L.A. in the early to mid-90's, and has continued his activism as a Ph.D. candidate at SUNY-Binghamton on the East Coast. At Binghamton, he has organized three groups: Students for Peace and Justice, Diversity Coalition, and Culture Committee. He is now starting a fourth. He has worked in the areas of immigrant rights, prison reform and peace and justice.
Chaubey would like to share the lessons he has learned as a student activist, including successes and mistakes. This talk could be both a "meeting of minds" with experienced activists, and a kind of "how to" for beginning activists, as well as a reflection on the future of student organizing.
