MEMBERSHIP MEETING - HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT - OCTOBER 2, 6:30PM (open to public)
Our October general membership meeting on October 2nd at 6:30pm at the Downtown UCLA Labor Center (675 S Park View St, Los Angeles, CA 90057) will feature a panel discussion about exciting developments in housing rights. All are welcome - the more, the merrier. The meeting will include discussion of the following topics:
* Yes on 10 - Proposition 10 will return the power to regulate rental housing units back to local governments by repealing the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act. California has the highest housing costs in the country, artificially inflated by Wall Street landlords, luxury developers, and big real estate. Prop 10 presents the best opportunity in decades to clear the way for strong rent control protections. Visit http://AffordableHousingAct.org for more information.
* Burlington Rent Strike - Recently featured in the Nation ( https://www.thenation.com/article/these-tenants-are-leading-the-largest-rent-strike-in-la-history/ ), the inspiring Burlington strike is the biggest in LA's history. Nearly half of the tenants in a Westlake apartment complex withheld their rent in protest of slum-like conditions. The tenants' unity and organizing efforts, combined with strategic legal defense, makes this a model for how to effectively fight back against slumlord greed.
* County Rent Control - The LA County Board of Supervisors recently voted to approve a temporary rent freeze in unincorporated areas of the County.
* Right to Counsel - The City Council’s recent unanimous decision to establish a renters’ right to counsel in eviction cases is a significant step forward in the battle against homelessness. Los Angeles is facing a housing crisis and a homelessness crisis, both of which are exacerbated by tenant evictions that destabilize families and uproot lives. A right to counsel will keep more people in their homes and off the streets.
