Reporters are publicly demeaned, called “worst people” and “liars,” their press credentials threatened, their access to news sources blocked, their ability to work jeopardized by threats of litigation and incarceration if they do not reveal sources.

At the same time, star professional football players, Colin Kaepernick and his colleagues, are demeaned, slandered, called \\'traitors\\', and blackballed for expressing solidarity with the young black men too often gunned down by police officers.

How can America’s democracy function without a vibrant press that the public trusts? And how can our society function if citizens are prohibited from exercising their Constitutional rights to free speech.

We’ll look at the history of such attacks and their current impact on working journalists and the public they serve. We\\'ll also examine attempts to deny citizens their right to peacefully express their political views.

Rev. K.W Tulloss, Western Regional Director of the National Action Alliance, which has protested the blackballing of Colin Kaepernick

Stephen Rohde, constitutional lawyer, lecturer, writer and political activist. Winner of a long series of appellate victories in the area of civil liberties and First Amendment law. Long-time ACLU board leader.

John Terhranian, Southwestern Law School Constitutional Law professor, interim co-director, Biederman Entertainment & Meida Law Institute.

Sharon Kyle, publisher of LA Progressive, a law professor, and ACLU National Board member.

Jim Nasella, ACLU SoCal Pasadena/Foothills Chapter, who works to defend immigrant rights and present Constitution Day classes to local high school students.

Cosponsors: ACLU SoCal Pasadena/Foothills Chapter • LA Progressive

The event is free and open to the public
