JOYCE RILEY TO SPEAK ON GULF WAR ILLNESS
Pasadena, Calif. ? Gulf War veteran advocate Joyce Riley will speak on Monday, November 17 at 7:30 PM at Caltech?s Baxter Lecture Hall. Riley will address Gulf War Illness, a collection of chronic symptoms that have disabled many Gulf War I veterans. This free lecture is open to the public, and no tickets are required.
Gulf War Illness has been documented in military men and women returning from Iraq after Operation Desert Storm. This illness is characterized by complex symptomology including fatigue, fevers, irritability, depression, skin rashes, and chronic bronchitis. Researchers speculate that this syndrome may stem from exposure to oil fires, nerve agents, and depleted uranium. Recent medical examinations of Gulf War II military men and women have revealed similar post-war symptoms, reaffirming the claim that the United States has done little to protect the health of its soldiers. This lecture will address the United States? long history of experimental testing and its legacy of post-war illnesses.
During her position as a C-180 aircraft flight nurse during the first Gulf War, Captain Riley fell ill to an unknown sickness and began investigating the prevalence of similar symptoms among other veterans. Her research has exposed the extent of damage that Gulf War Illness has caused to these former servicemen and women and their families. Ms. Riley currently serves as a spokeswoman for the American Gulf War Veterans Association and is a co-host, along with her husband, for the nationally syndicated Power Hour.
This event is hosted and organized by Peaceful Justice at Caltech (PJC). PJC is a student organization dedicated to creating a discourse on issues surrounding peace in a post-9/11 world.
