Q&A with attorneys Dan Kapelovitz and Jerry Friedman
Dan Kapelovitz is a criminal-defense attorney who has successfully represented animal-rights activists falsely accused of crimes as retaliation for their protesting activities. He argued an animal case before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and tried two federal cases where the defendant was accused of walking with dogs on federal land without a leash. During law school, Dan was the president of UCLA Law School’s Animal Law Society, did legal observing for animal-rights protestors, and served as a law clerk for the Animal Protection Unit of the Los Angeles City Attorney. After clerking for a federal judge for the United States District Court of the Central District of California, Dan opened his own criminal-defense practice.
Jerry Friedman has been an animal advocate for the last 25 years. Throughout this time, he has been involved in street-level activism, including civil disobedience, nonprofit management, including vice president of In Defense of Animals, and for the last 5 years an attorney. He has been part of the National Lawyers Guild since 2001 including as a coordinator of its Legal Observer Program, and the National Police Accountability Project since 2015, each institution committed to protecting the civil rights of activists.
