No! to Culver City Police Department Drones
Monday, January 8 at 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
9770 Culver Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232
On Monday, January 8, the City Council of Culver City will discuss an agenda proposal to buy 8 drones for ,000 for the police department. Join the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition to let the City Council of Culver City know that the community stands in complete opposition to the use of drones by the police.
The Los Angeles Police Commission's vote to approve the LAPD's use of drone will have a ripple effect throughout Los Angeles County unless we act.
Why we opposed the LAPD's use of drones:
· Mission Creep - Once the door to drones is open and a policy is created, then policy adapts itself- drones can be weaponized (ex: SWAT- originally was for special circumstances, hostages, special devices, barricaded suspects, etc. and now is used for low-level drug warrants, etc) ... As much as LAPD says that the drones will not be weaponized Mission Creep is real.
· Human Rights violation
· LAPD Militarization - drones will add to military equipment, tactics, technology they already use
· For years LAPD has led the country in the most killings by police
· Surveillance and invasion of privacy - LAPD has created a massive architecture of surveillance
· Trauma and safety - folks already experience trauma, worry and anger from presence of helicopters in the sky
· Los Angeles Police Commission supports LAPD’s racism and white supremacy
· LA Police Commission & Chief Beck dismissive and disrespectful to communities’ concerns
· Distrust: In 2014 it was revealed that LAPD officers had intentionally destroyed the Digital In-Car Video System or dash cams in 92 out of 300 patrol cars.
· SWAT 50th anniversary
· Corporate profit- Corporations like General Atomics are now pushing to have FAA guidelines changed to be more permissive to drones
· Data collection - the footage captured by drones will be kept in an LAPD database along with the information captured from body cameras and other surveillance devices.
· Capacity to cause harm runs very deep with the drone- it can not only be weaponized, but by capturing footage and images of people and putting it into a database, where someone can be targeted, that is also causing harm.
· LAPC oversight/rubber stamp - once again the commission is failing to consider the concerns of the public and is instead functioning as a rubber-stamp body for the LAPD
· Cities have rejected police drones as a result of community actions - in Seattle, Austin, Berkeley, and so far, here in Los Angeles.
Join us also on Tuesday, January 9th at 9:30 am - the next day, at LAPD Headquarters, the LA Board of Police Commissioners will discuss a donation from the Police Foundation to SWAT- “drone systems” worth K. The meeting will take place at LAPD Headquarters on Tuesday January 9th at 9:30am at 100 W 1st St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
