The Workers International League invites you to a lecture answering the question "What was the Class Nature of the Soviet State" at the Che Caf? on the UCSD campus at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2003.
The Russian Revolution is one the most influential events of the 20th century. Since its occurrence western academics, the apologists of Stalinism, Trotskyists, Cliffites, and liberals have each presented their viewpoints on the progressive content of the revolution and the social virtues and shortcomings of the state established afterwards. Differing definitions of socialism, communism, deformed workers states as well as regimes of state capitalism have all been applied by different ideologies to stages in the development of the first nation with a wholly planned economy. But the question requires a scientific analysis and conclusion.
John Peterson, Chief Editor of Socialist Appeal Magazine and National Secretary of the Workers International League presents the Marxist position of ?Proletarian Bonapartism? in distinction to the distortions, mystifications and misunderstandings raised in the course of 80-years of debate on the question of whether Russia degenerated into State Capitalism or into a deformed workers? state. This understanding is vital to the perspectives of the socialist movement in its relations to and its perspectives for existing so called ?socialist/communist? states. Open Q&A after the lecture. Lecture is held during normal caf? hours. Food and beverages are available at the caf?.
