Free Legal Observer Training

Get Certified to Defend Human Rights

Please join Organizing for Action on August 26, 2017 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm for a free legal observer training and discussion that will prepare you to monitor and document police and ICE activity at raids, protests, and arrests. This training will prepare concerned community members and allies to position themselves close enough to police activity to accurately report any wrongdoing. The goal of the training is to provide an overview of the current political environment and its impact on immigrant communities of Los Angeles, and teach new legal observers how to use their presence to deter law enforcement from violating human rights. If police do break the law, the notes and video evidence of a legal observer can be used in court to help ensure justice is served.

Training will be provided by Ameena Mirza Qazi, Executive Director of the National Lawyers Guild LA, which established its Legal Observer Program in 1968, and now provides hundreds of trainings across America every year. Its slogan: “Because human rights are more important than property rights.” Apolonio Morales, Political Director at CHIRLA, will speak about the current political climate and the institutional threats aimed at immigrant communities. Hosts Nina Rosser and Jason Berlin, with Organizing For Action, will moderate a Q&A session after the training.

Under the Trump administration immigrants’ rights are under attack. We must do everything we can to protect our most vulnerable populations. This legal observer training will help to do that, turning caring allies into empowered activists.
