We would like to invite all interested high school and college aged youth to participate in our Spring 2017 Session of Escuelita Aztlán (EAZ). Our Spring 2016 session was a huge success culminating in eight student murals on Washington Ave and we are back at it again!
Escuelita Aztlan is a free youth organizing, artivism, and community ethnic studies program based out of South Central Los Angeles. The goal of the program is to develop more cultural and political conciencia among young people in our communities. The six week program culminates with a student mural project. This is a great opportunity to get involved in your community and leave your mark on South Central by sharing your unique story through art!!!
Please join us on May 20th for a brief information session followed by our first lesson!!! LOCATION TO BE ANNOUCED SOON!
This Spring, EAZ will focus on Youth Organizing and Artivism.
Session 1 (5/20/17): Information Session/Art as Resistance Session 2 (6/3/17): Ethnic Studies Now Session 3 (6/10/17): Know Your Rights: Youth Organizing for Self-Determination Session 4 (6/17/17): La Mujer: The Role of Women in the Struggle Session 5 (6/24/17): Mural Design and Prep Workshop Session 6 (7/1/17): Mural Painting
Those who commit to the 6 week program will have the opportunity to learn street and mural art techniques from local artists and put those new skills to work on your very own street art project.
Escuelita Aztlán is an alternative education project of Union del Barrio that educates youth about the historical oppressions, contributions, and present conditions that impact their current realities. Escuelita Aztlán provides high school and college aged youth a space to share, learn and join the movement for social change.
