Yoshiko Shimada and Denise Uyehara
TRANS OKINAWA
International, award-winning artists Yoshiko Shimada (visual artist?Japan) and Denise Uyehara (performance artist/writer?United States) create Trans Okinawa, a room that reconstructs a giant map of the Japanese islands of Okinawa, exploring gender, identity, and the military presence throughout the terrain. Walls, floors and air host real/imaginary oceanic/topographic sites on which video and performance shed their light.
Tari Ito
WHERE IS THE FEAR?
Through a poetic multi-media exploration of the psychology of fear, Ito negotiates the space between multiple layers of white masks, images of 'anonymous' audience members, virtual blood, and gay bashing in Tokyo. Ito studied mime with Kikyu-za in Tokyo and was a member of Het Klein Movement Theatre in Amsterdam. Invisible Japan is made possible in part by the Asian Cultural Council, the Japan Foundation, and the Kawahara Fellowship.
The opening night reception is hosted by Asian Pacific Islanders for Human Rights and will start immediately after Tari Ito?s performance.
