Save Bernie's Mural!

Thursday, May 4 at 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM PDT

Los Angeles City Hall

200 N Spring St Ste 101, Los Angeles, California 90012

As many of you know, last year Johnie's Coffee Shop Restaurant was offered to grassroots activists as a volunteer space for Bernie Sanders. Since then, the space has become a hub for progressive activities and community building. It has become a place for the community to gather, and home to our family.

A couple of months ago, we received a complaint about the wooden "Bernie's" sign that had been put up in place of the neon "Johnie's" sign, which was taken down and repaired by the property owners. The complaint noted the historic nature of the building and requested that the neon sign be put back up. When the neon was repaired, the sign was returned to the front of the building as a show of good faith to the city.

Now, just a few months later, we have a new complaint. This time, the target is our beloved mural, which adorns the side of the building with the likeness of the man who inspired us to come together and build better communities and a better world, Bernie Sanders.

This is not, however, a political undertaking. We cite multiple non-political reasons why the mural must stay:

- The mural is a reminder of why we do this work. We are building a brighter future because one man inspired millions of people to honor one another and to work with empathy and love.

- The mural was intentionally painted in the style and colors of the building and fits into the neighborhood well as a piece of historic art on Museum Row.

- Yes, the most recent iteration of the old restaurant is historic. Journalists from all over the country and the world have written about the art installation and volunteer space known as Bernie's Coffee Shop.

- Many tourists come to Museum Row just to visit this iconic space that has almost become a place to which progressives, young people, and families make a pilgrimage just to see this world-famous icon in its inspiring new glory. People from around the world have been moved to tears by the fact that we are still here, still working for the future we all came together last year to fight for.

HOW CAN YOU HELP??

PLEASE attend this meeting at City Hall on Thursday. Please come prepared with your heartfelt statements on what Bernie's Coffee Shop and the mural mean to you, and what purpose you feel the space has served for the community and how the mural supports that.

LA City Hall, Room 1010

ALSO, please take 2 minutes to record yourself making a similar statement, so we can show TONS of support during our presentation. Email your submissions to berniescoffeeshop@gmail.com.

Please write to Michelle Manos or Jeremy White if you would like to be on the committee that is undertaking the defense of the mural. We need more voices if we are going to win this thing!
