Theatre Dybbuk & SIJCC Present Exagoge: An ACLU Benefit Reading - May 18
The Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center (SIJCC) will present theatre dybbuk’s reading of exagoge at the SIJCC on May 18. 100% of proceeds will be donated to the ACLU of Southern California.
exagoge is inspired by the first recorded Jewish play, a telling of the biblical exodus narrative in the style of a Greek Tragedy, written by Ezekiel the Poet in the 2nd Century BCE. theatre dybbuk used this little known work as the inspiration to create a multidisciplinary performance piece which toured to venues around Los Angeles in the summer of 2016.
Relating the ancient story to contemporary concerns, theatre dybbuk incorporates modern day narratives of refugee and immigrant experiences as well as those of the disenfranchised in American society to highlight the ongoing crises of peoples fleeing oppression throughout the world.
The event will feature a speaker from the ACLU who will share about the organization’s work and issues currently facing our community and country. The schedule of events is as follows:
7:30 pm – doors open, snack and drink reception 8:00 pm – ACLU speaker 8:30 pm – exagoge reading
The event will take place in The Box at the SIJCC, located at 1110 Bates Avenue, Los Angeles. Tickets are and can be purchased through the SIJCC’s website at: www.sijcc.net/community-events.

ABOUT THEATRE DYBBUK:
Theatre dybbuk creates provocative new works that blend physical theatre with dance, poetry, and music for exciting, utterly singular theatrical experiences. Playwright and artistic director Aaron Henne explores the rich world of Jewish folklore, rituals, and history, building lyrical new works that speak to contemporary audiences.
With an in-depth development process that can range from a few months to two years, Henne builds each piece with a cast of dedicated professional actors, dancers, musicians, and scholars. The resulting works, from the dark and visceral dance theatre of cave… a dance for lilith, to the life-affirming, music-rich festival piece assemble: modern spin | ancient celebration , are unique in the world of theatre and Jewish art—challenging, strange, and beautiful to behold.
