Students Realize Their Power Several area high schools students have successfully organized school walk-out's against the war. Students from LACES, an area magnet school held a walkout thursday night. Photographers snapped photos 1/2/3 of the kids marching out, being met by supporters. A report on the event was posted to the wire. Earlier, an article was posted describing the walkouts at Fairfax and Montebello High School. Read the LA-Weekly's coverage of the Fairfax Walkout.
Saddleback College students are planning also planning a walkout, students also organized a protest in East LA.
These walkouts occur at a time when war is shifting attention away from an economic crisis at home. With this distraction abroad, the Bush administration has underfunded its trumpeted "no child left behind" education reforms, and his greater tax proposals furthur threaten future budgets. Also showing disdain for our future Grey Davis' budget calls for slashes in education funding.
We are down to the wire. War is never inevitable until the first shots are
fired. Reasons why this war is wrong are familiar not only to LA-IMC's
readership but to millions of Americans across the political spectrum. At
no time in recent history has a progressive issue been both so popular and
been so pressing. Pressing because U.S. bombs soon may fall onto hundreds-of-thousands of innocents; from whose corpses will arise a worldwide American Empire, a
terrible crescendo in the long, bloody history of colonialism.
However, civil society can still seize the moment before the flag eclipses
itself. Massive
Non Violent Civil Disobediance more stated than
Monday's protest at the UN and DC's gathering during the State of the Union Address can force the issue. Spokespeople from
across ideologies, united against war, speaking solely of war can indelibly
bring a roar to the administration. Its clear from recent editorials in
major newspapers that the media will listen. They have turned the heat on
the administration. Its time to make it boil. comment.
Peace.
