Anti-IMF Protesters Shot and Killed While Surrendering to Police Three students were killed during a protest blockade of Papua, New Guinea government offices. According to reports, riot squad police opened fire with shotguns and M-16 assault rifles, chasing students back to the University of Papua New Guinea campus.

Salzburg Summit Hit by Protests Violent clashes have erupted between anti-globalisation protesters and police on the streets of the Austrian city of Salzburg, which is hosting a European economic summit.

Peaceful Protest Against BIO Approximately 1,500 colorfully-clad demonstrators marched and danced through the streets of San Diego today in a celebration of life. They were protesting BIO, a biotech industry convention starting here tomorrow. Signs, puppets and songs were used to call attention to issues such as biopiracy and genetically modified food.
Police presence was enormous...and unnecessary.

Hundreds were in attendance this weekend for Beyond Biodevastation, a teach-in discussing biowarfare, human genetic engineering, biopiracy, and farm and food issues.
TV News reports as well as Police statements are fueling community fears about tomorrow's march and the week's events. Local media was surprised by the pacific crowd at the conference, but the police presence set an ominous tone that hampered the educational and discursive goals of the attendees.
