LOS ANGELES, March 29, 2006 – The LA School district and police are enforcing a crack down on student walk outs today. All high schools are on lock down and police cars are patrolling the perimeter of some of those high schools that have seen the largest walk out in the past three days.
Still this crack down did not prevent about 50 students from Westchester High from staging a walkout and march to the offices of Univision this morning. They were able to meet with an anchor from the station. The students were followed by police squad cars, one police helicopter and 2 media helicopters. After staging a short rally and speaking with the newsman from Univision the students voluntarily boarded 2 school buses and were taken back to school. The march was peaceful and there were no arrests. The students will, however, be cited with truancy. From the newswire: Walkouts at Westchester High 3-29-06 | | VIDEO: Westchester High Walkout
La Gran Walkout, to City Hall
LOS ANGELES, March 27, 2005--Reports are that 25,000 students walked out of school today to protest anti-immigrant reform.
Leslie Radford reports: Today I met 2,000 of them walking to City Hall. I heard them on the streets, the cheering, chanting crew, the police sirens, the helicopter circling. By the time I shook loose from what I was doing, they'd passed by, so I jumped in my car to catch up with them marching down Cesar Chavez. A thousand students, spread over blocks, were walking down the sidewalk, with a police escort shutting down a lane of traffic . Full Story: La Gran Walkout, to City Hall by Leslie Radford

Costa Mesa is a microcosm of California. This coastal city has become the epicenter of an
immigration issue that threatens to divide our local communities and the nation. Costa Mesa also depicts a vivid portrayal of how radical anti-immigrant groups politicize local governments.
For many years, Costa Mesa was a cradle for Caucasian families and people of European ancestry. However, during the last two decades, it has attracted other ethnic groups, who have settled along the west and the northern parts of the city, making it more ethnically diverse.
In 1980, Whites comprised close to 90 percent of the total population, whereas Hispanics/Latinos of all races were 10 percent, Asians 5 percent and Blacks 1 percent (1). The 2000 Census revealed a dramatic shift: whites now are 57 percent; Latinos, 32 percent

Santa Ana police deploy armored cars and horses to squelch protest
SANTA ANA, CA -- Several of Santa Ana's poorest
working class Mexican neighborhoods suddenly found
themselves under a state of siege last night when an
estimated two hundred Santa Ana police officers,
Orange County Sheriff's deputies, and California
Highway patrolmen descended into the area and
squelched a peaceful protest near the intersection of
Bristol and McFadden Streets.
More than 700 people had assembled about a quarter
mile away to express their opposition to legislation
passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in
December that would criminalize undocumented workers.
The demonstration was peaceful and festive as people
carried flags, signs, and wore clothing symbolizing
their Mexican heritage. The street was flooded with
cars honking their horns.
Things took a turn for the worse when Santa Ana
policemen

BUENA PARK, CA -- A group of young high school
students, all marching in opposition to legislation
passed in the U.S. House of Representatives which
would criminalize undocumented workers, took to the
streets late yesterday afternoon and seized control of
a major Orange County freeway.
Stunned Buena Park police officers just sat inside
their patrol cars and did nothing but watch as a group
of about 150 young Mexican activists holding signs and
waving flags casually walked up the Beach Blvd. onramp
and headed eastbound on the Riverside Freeway.

Jim Gilchrist and his Minutemen proved that they can retreat from battle on a minute's notice by withdrawing Friday night from the front lines of Costa Mesa's immigration war started by Minuteman Mayor, Allan Mansoor.
The pullout follows a surge of immigrant organizing across the country that led to massive strikes by high school students and more than a half-million immigrants and supporters protesting in Los Angeles in solidarity with tens of thousands of others across the country.
