The UN World Conference Against Racism was convened with the best of intentions, but participation in the forum has been structurally flawed, leading to conflicts both within the conference and from without.

Thabo Mbeki, the President of South Africa, opened the NGO Forum Against Racism Tuesday with a speech that sparked anger and criticism over his government's current policiesof privatization and their devastating effect on the poor, mostly non-white citizens of South Africa.IMC-SA press release on the opening.

Activists formed the Durban Social Forum, a counter-conference, to reconnect global economic and social issues with racism.

More information on the general strikeand other conference news as it becomes available.

Race in the Post-Third Word, by Makani Themba-Nixon: the expansion of the definition of racism threatens the focus of anti-racism on white supremacy and North-South issues.

Camping in the shadow of one of the world's deadliest borders, digital, art and media activists from around the world gathered this past weekend to share ideas, artwork, food, music and conversation with each other and the residents of Tijuana, who live daily with the 10 foot boundry that divides the U.S. and Mexico. Etched in the minds of everyone in attendance were scenes repeated over and over throughout the weekend: lovers holding hands though a hole in the fence; a family picnicing on the beach - three on one side of the border, four on the other and the incessant sound of the automatic sprinklers watering the empty manicured park on the US side.

 MIWON photo
MIWON,the Multi-Ethnic Immigrant Workers Organizing Network, demanded along with day and other low-paid laborers that undocumented workers and their families receive, among other things, legal access to higher education. At a MIWON organized "town hall" Union, Church and many elect city officials (with the exception of the absent Mayor Hahn) supported the MIWON Platform. Candace Kim reports on the meeting and how one worker jubilantly responds “This is a major victory “now let’s see what can really change.” Read the report Also, read a plea by the State Workers union to help them pressure the State of California to improve their new contract, which is up this year. One Union representative stated assuredly that if there were actual pressure on the Governor, something would materialize.

[ MIWON Platform ] Groups are calling for organized action at the S29 protests. The International Action Center - L.A., in coalition with others, is calling on the people of Los Angeles to surround the White House on Sat, Sept 29 to defeat the Bush program.

The Left-Over Collective have called for inclusion of radical positions in the anti-globalization movement.

[ IAC | Left-Over Collective ] In both Durban and Israel, IMC journalist-activists are finding life difficult. In Israel, an IMC writer is now AWOL from the Israeli army, seeking refuge. In Durban, the IMC has been set up as a refuge for NGOs that have been excluded from the WCAR.

[ Israeli Journalist | WCAR Discrimination ] Demonstrators continue to gather at the Italian Consulate in Los Angeles to honor the death of Giuliani. Photos: 1, 2, 3, 4.
