Hundreds of people gathered at the South Central Farm last Wednesday night to defend the farmers from eviction and their farm from destruction. A vigil surrounding the farm was held and later in the evening there was Hip Hop, Son Jarocho and dancing. Supporters continue to arrive every day and the encampment is growing.

With the stay on evictions lifted on Tuesday, evictions could come at any moment. For now it seems that the large numbers of people coming to the farm may be the only thing preventing the evictions. The sheriffs to date have not received notice to proceed and there has been no sign of increased police presence near the farm. LOS ANGELES, May 23, 2006 – Faced with possible eviction this week and the destruction of their farm, the farmers and their supporters are converging on the farm to defend it by any means necessary. Famous tree sitters Julia Butterfly & John Quigley are currently sitting in the oldest tree on the farm, a large walnut tree. They have been joined by the world famous folk singer, Joan Baez. Farmers are camped out at the farm around the clock to defend it.

The farmers have exhausted all legal challenges to the eviction in the courts and a contract option deal with the trust for public land to buy the property as expired. The mayor’s office which had promised 10 million in funds has failed to keep that promise. The judge at court hearing this Wednesday is expected to release the order for evictions. If so the farmers could face eviction as early as midnight Wednesday (12:01 AM, Thursday) From the Newswire: Joan Baez, Julia Butterfly & John Quigley Begin Tree Sit at South Central Farm | | Living in Trees at South Central Farm by Jennifer Morris

LOS ANGELES, 21 May 2006--In spite of the obvious provocation, protest organizers agreed in advance that non-violence was the order of the day in confronting the minutemen's march against migrant rights along the now-historic Gran Marcha route. And so it was, but the protestors' hard-bitten contempt was palpable, and the the shoppers and shopkeepers along Broadway were clear in their resentment. UPDATE: Two protesters, including a well known Chicano activist, were arrested in Downtown, Los Angeles during a confrontation with members of the volunteer border patrol the Minuteman Project. Activist clash with Minuteman Project by C.J.

Using a provocative tactic, made famous by the Orangemen in N. Ireland and utilized by the KKK and neo-nazis on many occasions, the Minutemen marched directly down a thoroughfare packed with the very people they target. The Minutemen numbered about 120 while counter-protesters numbered around 200. LAPD numbered around 100. Police presence was heavy and the Minutemen, marched with a police escort.

The counter-protesters were loud and they followed the Minutemen all the way up to City Hall. At City Hall the police line was extended and counter-protesters were not allowed to get near the racist rally was taking place on the steps. Little by little various Minutemen and their supporters made their way down the hill, across the lawn toward the side where the counter-protestors had amassed. In an apparent error in planning, porta-potties were set up on the other side of the police line right next to the counter-protestors.
