POWER (People Opposing War, Empires, and Rulers) are holding a three day anti-war conference titled the "Many Faces of War" this weekend at Arts in Action in Los Angeles. POWER organized this event "to educate and empower people to make informed decisions about the many different wars being waged all over the world"; and to provide "an anarchist perspective on the different aspects and types of war, and how it affects us ordinary people in our daily lives."

For directions or more information on the conference click here or go to www.wearepower.org.

Thousands marched to protest police brutality in Los Angeles, in what's become an annual tradition for local radical youth. Down in Orange County, another march was held that was far smaller, but energetic, and brought out radical youth to shout out against corruption and power.

Life, Water, and the Pursuit of Happiness
from the newswire;
An action alert posted by Faramarz Nabavi of the Stop Cadiz Coalition (faramarz@riseup.net) calls for continued pressure on the LA Metropolitan Water District (MWD) to dump a proposal by Cadiz Inc. Cadiz' scheme has publicly owned water being pumped onto private land and piped with public funds to be sold back to the city for private profit. Unjustifiable on moral, philosophical, legal and historic terms, the Cadiz proposal is not doing well- but activists call for continued outrage to end their discussion on the plan alltogether.
For more info on the issue, check out this Public Citizen backgrounder.

Update: Tuesday 10/8/02 The Cadiz plan was rejected! Read the news.

Re-imagining Maps, Rethinking Oil
Artist Peter Fend recently exhibited his work at the Pasadena Community College. His exhibit suggests a geopolitical connection between the Colorado River Basin and the Persian Gulf. He suggests that instead of seeing eachother as enemies, the regions should find commonality in the fact that both regions suffer similar problems. These problems include problems caused by the oil industry and drought. Because of ecological similarities, the 2 regions and should see eachother as allies in solving their shared problems.

Laying out challenges to nationalism and oil-based economies, Fend's work is visionary. It calls for a new perspective on the consitution of power- that polities should be centered around human needs like water and energy, not abstract lines of colonial cartographers. Peter Fend says, "yes, Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. Those weapons are called oil. If the oil burried below Iraq is used, it will do more long-term harm to the planet than any weapon Saddam Hussein may have now."

In response to the global crisis, Fend (through his group Ocean-Earth) and others call for bold alternative geopolitical strategy and investigation into alternative technologies instead of proceeding with oil-death policy.

Greenpeace Locks-down the Pumps
October 19th found anExxon Mobil station at Beverly and LA Cienaga on the westside shut down by Greenpeace activists. Exxon Mobil, the worlds largest oil company has been targetted for protest because they are actively countering measures that ameliorate global warming.

While many activists applaud Greenpeace's action, some are also critical of the organization's labor practices.

October 22, 2002 is the 7th annual National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation.

Los Angeles - 2 p.m., meet at corner of Olympic and Broadway, downtown Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, anti-police brutality activist and spoken-word artist Truthmaze (William Harris) and two friends were attacked by plainclothes police officers in Minneapolis while flyering Saturday night. Ironically, they were flyering for the upcoming October 22nd Day of Protest Against Police Brutality. The officers apparently did not identify themselves; the activists defended themselves and as a result are facing charges.
