Al-Ahram Weekly Online offers the world a richly complex vision of contesting idelas and ways of thinking. Especially valuable in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on America, it always provides a sophisticated panaroma of ideas beyond the closed circle of the US-centric media.
-
"When Narratives Collide." Desperation has no address, writes Azmi Bishara (Palestinian Israeli member of the Knesset); and kamikaze operations speak a language no one understands. [A few tantalizing excerpts from a much longer, densely-woven piece. Thought-provoking. A must read for getting outside the US-Centric mindset.]
-
"Caught in the Middle." Cairo is urging caution and restraint to a hotheaded Washington, warning: look before you leap, write Nevine Khalil and Soha Abdelaty
-
"A Forbidden Alliance?" Does Islam sanction suicide bombings? Can Muslim and non-Muslim countries join forces when launching attacks on Islamic states? Jailan Halawi monitors a growing controversy
- "In the Shadow of the WTC." There were no "celebrations" in the West Bank town of Jenin after the strikes on America. Nor were there mass outpourings of grief. At best there was a kind of empathy. Jenin too has been burying its dead....

In it's heat to vanquish the latest enemy, The Bush Administration, seemingly oblivious to past blunders, is on its way to a head-on crash with repeat disaster. the United Front is a terrorist regime with a history of
abuse and massacres against the Afghani people in its war against the Taliban. But in typical "the enemy of our enemy is our friend" form, the Bush war machine has embraced this hot wire with warm zeal. The US Mainstream Media has carried this policy forward by promoting the United Front as the new darlings and the "last hope" for our aim of destroying the enemy. The Sydney Morning Herald says the Northern Alliance are merely one exhibit in a rouge's gallery of new allies:
"Pompous Twaddle from the Family of Freedom" and
"US Allies Are Killers and Drug Dealers" (about Pakistan's intelligence service).

Protests are planned this weekend both locally and in DC. The rush to war seems to have suddenly slowed--but that's no reason for protests to do the same. [

Since the 9/11 attacks on the East Cost, the Bush administration has shown its mercenary streak as the military sets out to bring back Osama Bin Laden "Dead or Alive." But the President and his advisors have also indicated that the war against terrorism is also one that could be fought on American soil. In a recent speech to the FBI Academy, President Bush said of Attorney General John Ashcroft "You've got some pretty good generals here, starting with General Ashcroft ." When the President jokes about giving military powers to the official who oversees the FBI, it becomes worth it to pay attention to who the FBI considers a terrorist.

Pacifica Update : Soothing the Masses Amidst the confusion of war, the Pacifica board has reorganized, stacking its board with supporters for itself, including former scandal plagued former DC mayor Marion Berry, and others who have clipped their grass roots. Some activists have accused the board of using the tragedy to its own advantage.
Activists have demanded a return of Amy Goodman to the air, but have been rebuffed. The actions of Pacifica management have been tarnished by mishandling of the WTC attacks. WBAI, located in Manhattan near the Towers, suffered a two day outage, while Goodman, also in the area, set up a studio and was broadcasting immediately. WBAI has also been slammed for substituting soothing music in place of "political" content from the airwaves, specifically removing a show focusing on hate crimes against South Asian and Arab Americans produced by Asian Pacific Forum.

A Gallup International poll finds that substantial majorities in 32 out of 35 countries favor a criminal justice response to the terrorist attack on America, rather than military action. Opposition to attacking civilians is even stronger. Despite a virtual media blackout on alternatives to war in the US, 39% of Americans favored extradiction and trial of terrorists over military action.
