Striking clothing trade union members at Hollander Home Fashions Co. in Los Angeles claimed "total victory" on May 18th when their ten week long strike forced management to raise their pay and benefits. But the strike may have been more successful for trade union solidarity than financial gain.

[ Worth The Walk, by Cayce Callaway | Comments on Hollander ] BoycottKPFK.org reports that a hundred protesters showed up to begin a boycott of the summer fund drive. The activists, like most of the left in LA, are torn between supporting the longstanding progressive radio station and decrying its management and board, who are attempting to make the station more palatable to apolitical people with more money.

The fight has gotten uglier, with angry words published by KPFK management against the protesters. Meanwhile, the Pacifica Board has decided to forgo modifying the bylaws, and board member Michael Palmer (a real estate VP) has resigned. Activists claim meaningful victories.

[ Boycott KPFK | Pacifica Campaign | Search IMC-LA for KPFK ] The big IMC meeting in San Francisco began hammering out the details of IMC membership and Open Publishing. The network is growing, expanding the potential of transnational democratic media. Press Freedom Conference Notes from Guy Berliner of SDIMC.

In contrast the Digital Video conference at Columbia ignored the democratic potential of DV. Dimitri Devyatkin issues a critique, featured in The Strawman's Revenge.

Rally in Support of Palestinian Independence
"Some 1,000 people participated in the noisy, colorful, militant march through Westwood that demanded an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. Giant Puppets, noise makers, banners, and a sea of Palestinian Flags drove home the point... 'Free Palestine Now!'The majority of the protestors were Palestinian... but there were significant numbers of Asians, Latinos, African Americans, and Anglos who lent their support. Many individual Jews were also in attendance, though there was no organized Jewish representation among the demonstrators," Mark Vallen reports. Photos by Vallen and Marc Farjeon.
