unanimously passed an amendment to the 2002 appropriations budget entitled "Combating Terrorism Act of 2001." The amendment will go to committee for approval either today or tomorrow. The Bush Administration jumped on board yesterday with its own amplified version of the bill. Both pieces of legislation broadly expand law enforcement's wiretapping and surveillance capabilities, giving particularly far-ranging powers in cases of Internet surveillance. full story

Anti-War Demonstration, Saturday, Westwood photo from the Griffith Park peace vigil
The anti-war demo that was scheduled Downtown has been moved. The new location is the Westwood Federal Building on Wilshire east of the 405. Starts at NOON, Saturday the 22nd.
A purported viral attack to the server hosting Znet, the online companion to Z Magazine has, for the moment at least, crippled a site that provides radical content to thousands of internet users. The server reported that they had no reliable backup.
The questions raised by this are chilling. Was it simply a virus as suggested or are we looking at the beginning of a crackdown on a critical point of view?
