The peace movement says "Justice, Not War." But with terrorists, how can justice be achieved without war? What is the "war on terrorism," and why is it being elevated as the capstone of U.S. foreign policy? What other policies should the U.S. government be following to reduce the likelihood that people will undertake terrorist agendas?
The answers to these and 44 other great questions from Michael Albert and Stephen Shalom of Z Magazine.

Let Freedom Ring...Boycott the Bell! Support the Farmworkers Who Pick Tomatoes for Taco Bell! The Taco Bell Mini Tour has reached LA. In the wake of the terrible events of September 11, the Coalition of Immokolee Workers (CIW) postponed the much anticipated Taco Bell Truth Tour, which was scheduled to commence on Sept 13. However, the farmworkers' struggle -- for a decent wage, benefits, and better working conditions -- continues. Hence, the "Mini" Tour was organized. Over the past ten days a small group of farmworkers and CIW organizers have travelled from Florida, north through Chicago, and onto the Bay Area and now Southern California; raising awareness of the on-going boycott of Taco Bell. Today (October 16), the Tour will be making a stop at Taco Bell's Corporate headquarters in Irvine. So far, Taco Bell has refused to talk with CIW. Stay Tuned. Excerpt from "Necessary Illusions" by Noam Chomsky There is a standard device to whip the domestic population of any country into line in support of policies that they oppose: induce fear of some terrifying enemy, poised to destroy them... "the evil scourge of terrorism" was a natural choice for this role in the early 1980s, as the United States sought to concoct an enemy weak enough to be attacked with impunity but sufficiently threatening to mobilize the general population in support of the Reaganite expansion of state power at home and violence abroad. The threat waned when it became necessary to face the costs of these policies a few years later. The media rallied enthusiastically to the enterprise.
The meaning of the term "terrorism" is not seriously in dispute. It is defined with sufficient clarity in the official U.S. Code and numerous government publications. A U.S. Army manual on countering the plague defines terrorism as "the calculated use of violence or threat of violence to attain goals that are political, religious, or ideological in nature. This is done through intimidation, coercion, or instilling fear." Still more succinct is the characterization in a Pentagon-commissioned study by noted terrorologist Robert Kupperman, which speaks of the threat or use of force "to achieve political objectives without the full-scale commitment of resources."
Kupperman, however, is not defining "terrorism"; rather, "low intensity confict" (LIC), a form of international terrorism, as the definition indicates and actual practice confirms. LIC is the doctrine to which the United States is officially committed and which has proven its worth in preventing successful independent development in Nicaragua, though it faltered in El Salvador despite its awesome toll. It must be emphasized that LIC -- much like its predecessor, "counterinsurgency" -- is hardly more than a euphemism for international terrorism, that is, reliance on force that does not reach the level of the war crime of aggression, which falls under the judgment of Nuremberg.
There are many terrorist states in the world, but the United States is unusual in that it is officially committed to international terrorism, and on a scale that puts its rivals to shame.

Garment Workers Protest Fashion 21, Activist Arrested Over 50 garment workers and activists demonstrated against the Fashion 21 store on N. Lake in Pasadena today. The protest was part of a continuing campaign designed to bring attention to the sweatshop conditions endured by the workers who manufacture clothes for Forever 21, the parent company, in six different factories in Los Angeles. A lawsuit has also been filed by the Garment Workers' Center against the retailer and the manufacturers. They are suing for back pay and upgraded working conditions, including minimum wage, 8 hour days and scheduled breaks. Matt Horton, a Pasadena activist, was arrested, cited and released by Pasadena police for distributing flyers to vehicles stopped at a traffic light. [ Photo of arrest | Sweatshop Watch ]
