ACTIVISTS DISCUSSION: Where do we go from here?
As activists look to the challenges ahead they are also looking back to learn from the lessons of the past. Some are asking the tough questions.

What strategies and tactics are working and which are not? What are the long term goals and objectives of the movement? Is there really a cohesive movement to speak of? When is protest effective and when is it merely symbolic? Should organizers cooperate with local authorities? Do organizers have a responsibility to create a safe space for dissent or is it really a protest if you have to get a permit to march?

These and other important questions are part of the current discussion within the activist community. Links to related postings: Westwood Parade by 1Planet1People

Martin Luther King Day Parade
MONDAY January 17th, 10:00 a.m. gather on the east side of Normandie Avenue between MLK Boulevard and Vernon Avenue. Look for an area marked out in chalk on the street that says "GROUP 327." Join with Rev. James Lawson, the veteran civil rights leader who marched and organized alongside Rev. Martin Luther King; Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace (ICUJP); The Coalition Against Militarism in Schools (CAMS); and CODEPINK-LA to honor Rev. Martin Luther King's legacy of peace and opposition to war and violence in the Los Angeles Kingdom Day Parade.

Remembrance of Martin Luther King
LOS ANGELES, January 17, 2005 - An estimated 10,000 people came together for the annual Kingdom Day Parade to honor the slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

The event was mostly festive and peaceful except for an excess police presence and the inclusion of military marching formations in the parade. There were a few unfortunate incidents captured on camera by LA-IMC reporters. The details of these incidents are still unclear.
