Attorney General John Ashcroft doesn't have enough to do, hunting down terrorists. With the help of a rollover Congress, he now has a new and bigger club to go after federal judges who impose lighter sentences in criminal cases than he would like. Read full story.

Ashcroft's Memo and Sherman Austin: Coincidence?
Attorney General John Ashcroft distributed a memo on on July 28, 2003. He wants prosecutors to closely monitor which judges impose more lenient sentences than federal guidelines recommend, a step some critics say could limit judicial independence. Sherman Austin had a hearing scheduled on July 28, 2003, that the CLERK FORGOT TO ENTER ON THE JUDGE'S SCHEDULE. On August 4, 2003, Sherman returned to court and Judge Wilson gave him 12 months in prison. Coincidence?

The Indemedia readership and progressive community are all too aware of the ugly face of repression at the hands of the intelligence establishment, the military, police, and prison industrial complex. Yet absent or less prevalent in the media are the abuses perpetrated by the so-called science of psychiatry. Support Coalition International has released this statement on behalf of survivors of psychatric abuse that have been reporting that Psychiatrists are able with impunity to:

* Incarcerate citizens who have committed crimes against neither persons nor property.
* Impose diagnostic labels on people that stigmatize and defame them.
* Induce proven neurological damage by force and coercion with powerful psychotropic drugs.
*Stimulate violence and suicide with drugs promoted as able to control these activities.
* Destroy brain cells and memories with an increasing use of electroshock (also known as electro-convulsive therapy)
* Employ restraint and solitary confinement - which frequently cause severe emotional trauma, humiliation, physical harm, and even death - in preference to patience and understanding.
*Humiliate individuals already damaged by traumatizing assaults to their self-esteem.

Horror stories of Soviet psychatric techniques using mind science like a weapon to torture, institutionalize, and even lobotomize dissidents, whistlblowers and undesirables have gone on in the good old U.S of A for quite a while, largely unreported by the media. Consumer advocate, radio commentator, and champion of alternative health issues Gary Null has compiled a useful introduction to the travisty of psychiatric force and how it is used to pathologize people and life itself.
Read the story of Los Angelino, Samual Rangel, to understand some of the dangers of these policies.
