The Chief of Police enjoys much media praise and attention for his 'quality of life' doctrine and his so called war on gangs. This, while ignoring his appalling record regarding police brutality under his leadership. Bratton's tenure in New York resulted in an investigation by Amnesty International after a sharp rise in police misconduct. There was a spike in deaths by police gunfire immediately following his assuming command of the LAPD in the fall of 2002. Recently, the LAPD shot and killed another unarmed youth which was not a rare occurance when Bratton was Police Commissioner of New York. The recent sweep of the homeless is typical of Bratton's attack on the poor and disadvantaged.
