One-hundred-five years ago on February 4th, the US "bought" the Philippines from Spain for $20 million (after a successful popular revolution), and took over the role of colonizer, beginning a four-year war that would end in the deaths of between 200,000 and 1.4 million Filipinos. The exact number is unknown, and the war itself is systematically revised in history, when it's referred to as the "Phillipine Insurrecton" in the US.

LA Peace Movement Marches on Mainstream Media
Around twenty-thousand anti-war demonstrators flooded the streets of downtown Hollywood today and marched on CNN. Declaring that the mainstream media has let down the people of America, and by extenision (since the good ole USA is (once again) a bloodthirsty empire), the people the world, with its distorted coverage and biased pro-war commentary, the demonstrators held a rally at the CNN building on Sunset Blvd. And what's a Hollywood event without stars: Eddie Vedder sang an a-capella song against SUVs, while Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, and Oscar nominated director Pedro Almodovar spoke to the overflowing crowd, declaring their solidarity with the international peace movement. At the end of the day 78 people were arrested, 40 via non-violent civil disobedience in the Hollywood and Vine intersection, 38 via police over-reaction. Once again, on balance, it was a spirited day for the anti-war cause -- no matter how CNN might try to marginalize us. See photos from the day in Hollywood: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
