Laguna Beach: Minutemen drop their mask LAGUNA BEACH, 15 July 2006--The minutemen were mean. Just sheer, ugly, dog-biting mean. One of them had discovered the Laguna Beach Day Labor Center was on state land but, just days later, on July 11, the City of Laguna Beach leased the land from the state to keep the center open. The minutemen came to Laguna Beach to protest their defeat, at a day labor center that has been a hotspot over the past year between immigrant supporters and deportation mongers. But the City had already made up its mind. And the minutemen had lost before they even began.
Under the hot summer sun, the anti-migrant protestors set their tone when a minutewoman, recognized only as Penny, drove into a passing bicyclist, knocking him to the ground as she honked at her friends while turning into the parking lot. Her compatriots rushed to comfort the driver, while the cyclist lay in the street. The minutemen were in no mood to worry about other people. In a flashback to Hal Netkin’s violent vehicular attack in Garden Grove, the driver was apparently not cited by any of the dozen or so police present.

HOLLYWOOD -- Underneath a Disney marquee promoting “pirates”, The Mexica Movement, an Indigenous Rights Educational Organization, called for an immediate international boycott against The Walt Disney Company and all of its holdings. The announcement was made in front of Disney’s El Capitan Theater on Hollywood Boulevard before local media (including a Fox affiliate from Hong Kong which later broadcast the story across China).
The Mexica Movement is launching this boycott because Disney employs talk show hosts PAUL HARVEY and DOUG MCINTYRE, who have spread the Minutemen/SOS white supremacist agenda against the Mexican and Central American communities in the United States. (Mexican and “Central American” descent people are in their vast majority an Indigenous people, both Full-blood and Mixed-blood).

There is growing evidence that the backlash against this Spring’s massive demonstrations for immigrants rights has begun. This was not unexpected. But what was not expected is the degree to which presumed allies of the movement would turn against it and cooperate with anti-immigrant forces.
The events of this past few weeks should be proof enough that those once thought to be supportive of immigrants rights are now its most dangerous enemies One organizations at the center of the reactionaries plan to derail and co-opt the immigrants rights movement is the National Council of La Raza, the NCLR.
Flying the flag of bipartisanship and compromise solutions this group is currently holding a convention in Los Angeles.
NCLR has already been exposed by the March 25 Coalition, the group that organized the demonstrations early this Spring. This Saturday the March 25 Coalition staged a picket at the convention (see What's Next for Latino Community on the LA-IMC calendar) to call attention to the double talk and deception of the NCLR.

It’s in this context that the government wants pro-migrant groups to accede to a “compromise.” The simple truth is that those who are willing to take the bait -like the National Council of La Raza – are accepting terms of surrender in the war against migrants. In a Devil’s bargain they are willing to sacrifice as many as 7 million people in order to save some 5 million from the most direct impacts of mass raids, detention camps and deportations. ... HOLLYWOOD, July 8, 2006 - Police violence erupted in Hollywood today as a crowd of anti-Minutemen protesters and innocent bystanders were caught in the midst of a spontaneous police riot. As the Minutemen and their supporters held a protected rally on the southeast corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Argyle Street, the opposition overflowed to the nearby corners with the biggest crowd on the southwest corner. Having already surrounded the opposition protestors, members of the LAPD aggressively approached. This despite the fact that the opposition activists were non-violent even when approached by Minutemen provocateurs that frequently drifted across the street. Full Story by Next Move | |
