Democracy When? Activist Strategizing in Los Angeles opened May 4th and will be at LACE on Hollywood Boulevard through June 15th. The show is an example of experimental curatorial practices that aim to both open up the gallery to a living social dialogue and decenter the roll of both the genius artist and genius curator while kicking up dust.
To Quote the curator, “Democracy When? is best described as a collective think tank for the exchange and rethinking of activist strategies and practices." In addition to their contributions, the show's participants where asked to make statements around 6 problematics that will be subjects of discourse through the length of the show. The problematics are
COMING TO ACTIVISM AFTER THE EMERGENCE OF IDENTITY POLITICS
INHABITING THE ACTIVIST ROLE IN A POST-SEPTEMBER 11 CLIMATE
ACTIVIST AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES
THE COMMODIFICATION OF "THE REBEL" VS. ACTIVIST MEDIA INFILTRATION
ACTIVISM AND CAPITAL
ACTIVISM AS DIRECT ACTION VS. ACTIVISM AS ART
How best does art and activism synch up??(comments here)??
Understanding that the everpresent ability of culture to create contexts in which political change falls into being, the LA-IMC is participating in this show.
In addition to having a computer monitor and screenings in the space, we will also be recording the open sessions and playing them over KillRadio every friday from 4-6 through the length of the show
