The Torture of Mumia Abu-Jamal Continues off Death Row --Supporters Demand Transfer (tags)

After being transferred from death row in December, Mumia was put in ‘the hole’ at SCI Mahanoy’s ‘Restrictive Housing Unit,’ where the conditions are actually more restrictive than when he was on death row. Supporters, including the National Lawyers Guild (for whom Mumia serves as Vice President) who has set up an online petition, are calling for his immediate transfer to general population, so that among other things, he will be able to touch his family for this first time in about 30 years.

Will Jerry Brown Close Pelican Bay Prison? (tags)

Democratic Governor Jerry Brown is under a federal mandate to release thousands of prisoners from California's overcrowded concentration camp-prisons. Abolishing the entire prison-punishment system and the death penalty would be best, replacing it with job training for decent-paying jobs in one year for those under 50 and lifetime good pensions for those over 50. He could start by closing Pelican Bay Prison, a vicious hellhole that would make Hitler proud.

Prison Abolition In Practice --Part two of an interview with Criminal Injustice Kos (tags)

Let’s get rid of prison rape. Let’s reinstitute rehabilitation. Let’s repeal certain draconian sentencing laws. All good and essential ideas. But very little – in some cases, nothing - will fundamentally change unless those ideas, and more, are advanced within a strategic framework of abolition.

“Earth Is for People, Not for Corporations” (tags)

Election fraud expert Steven Freeman headlined “Earth Is for People, Not for Corporations” at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood July 1. The event featured a wide variety of anti-corporate presentations and showed the role of corporations in promoting and profiting from every current social evil, from war to the exploitation of immigrants and denial of the reality of climate change. It also exposed the role of corporate media and discussed ways people can challenge it.

Democratic Party Defends Israeli Attack on Freedom Flotilla (tags)

Are you still registered Democrat instead of the pro-Palestinian Peace & Freedom Party or Green Party? The Democratic Party has come out in full force in support of the massacre of 15 members of the Freedom Flotilla, with 9 officially dead and 6 missing, reported thrown overboard by Israel's military, at US taxpayer expense. Here are the statements of the latest Democrats, defending Israel, after Democratic Vice President Joe Biden did the same, and the Republicans also do the same as both are 100% pro-Israel at all levels of office. And Critical Resistance's smuggled video is also here, showing the peaceful nature of the flotilla members.

The Jena Generation --An interview with Jordan Flaherty (tags)

If this city is going to recover, the first step is getting out the truth that New Orleans is not okay. Most of the country believes either that New Orleans has been rebuilt, or that, if not, it’s because people here are lazy and/or corrupt and wasted the nation’s generous assistance. But New Orleans is still a city in crisis. The oft-promised aid, whether from FEMA or various federal and private agencies, has not arrived.

Mothers Speak About War And Terror (tags)

Humankind's uncanny ability to make major advances in one civilization while simultaneously razing others beyond recognition is a strange facet of our nature. Yet most Americans are far removed from the constant dangers and terrors of living under a war. Few of us who did not serve in Vietnam or Iraq, for instance, have a clear understanding of the devastation wrought on those countries. The gap between our reality and theirs served as the driving force behind American author Susan Galleymore's venture into the war-torn countries of the Middle East. Her new book, "Long Time Passing: Mothers Speak About War & Terror," tells the stories of the repercussions of war on the mothers, families, communities, and cultures of Iraq, Israel, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Afghanistan, and the United States.

Local San Diego Activists Defend Friendship Park (tags)

Since 1971, the Monument Mesa at Friendship Park on the U.S.-Mexico border has been an informal gathering place where people kept from physically coming together by the border fence could nonetheless reach out and pass each other greetings, kisses, presents and food. No longer: the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, seemingly determined to wipe out any sign that the people of the U.S. and Mexico should actually regard each other with anything other than wary hostility, have put the mesa straight in the cross-hairs of the triple border fence. Local activists Christian Ramirez and John Fanestil addressed a San Diego audience April 17 to tell what they're doing to try to save Friendship Park.

CA Military Mom's New Book About War and Mothers Launches (tags)

Susan Galleymore made international headlines by taking the extraordinary and even dangerous step of traveling to Iraq in 2004 to visit her soldier son stationed on a military base in the so-called Sunni Triangle, north of Baghdad. What she found in Iraq – the horrors of war which was at once heartbreaking and compelling - challenged her to continue her journey interviewing mothers in war zones including Iraq, Israel and the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Afghanistan and the US. These powerful first-person stories offer dramatic insight into the impact of war on mothers, families, communities, in those countries. On Sunday afternoon, May 3rd, local military moms, musicians, poets, and artists will celebrate the publication of Susan Galleymore’s new book Long Time Passing: Mothers Speak About War and Terror by Pluto Press / Palgrave MacmIllian.

DNC Protest, Split, and the Principled Stand of Cynthia McKinney (tags)

"As the United States activated Navy ships and the Air Force to begin an airlift of non-specified goods into the former Soviet state of Georgia, and military exercises began in the Persian Gulf near Iran, I received communications from certain individuals among the Colorado Greens who were organizing campaign support events there, suggesting that I not participate in an anti-war program being organized by other individuals in Colorado." -Cynthia McKinney In addition, the Green Party of Colorado has issued false statements to the press and all over the internet claiming that Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney will not be participating in the Recreate ’68 events. Here is one such statement from Dave Chandler, co-chair of the Colorado Green Party, Green Party candidate for U.S. Congress in the Seventh Congressional District, and supporter of a Denver ballot measure that would seize the vehicles of illegal immigrants: “Cynthia McKinney, Green Party candidate for President, and Rosa Clemente, Green Party candidate for Vice President are NOT participating in any Recreate ‘68 activities. Both candidates, and the Green Party of Colorado, are refuting this announcement and are stating that neither candidate, nor the Green Party of Colorado, are in any way associated with Recreate ’68, nor will any of their candidates be speaking at or attending any event, nor are they in any way associated with the group Recreate ’68.” This is a blatant lie. Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente will be speaking at the Recreate ’68 events.

USLAW/UFPJ Sponsor Pro-Occupation Iraq Labor Speaker in LA (tags)

This month, US Labor Against the War, United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) and the American Friends Service Committee are sponsoring an "Iraq Labor Tour" to various U.S. cities. These speakers will be coming to Los Angeles this weekend, June, 8-10th. A couple of years ago a similar tour of Iraq labor leaders came to LA, who were very strongly opposed to the US Occupation. This time one of the featured speakers represents the Iraq Federation of Oil Workers , which spearheads opposition to privatization of Iraqi oil and demands immediate U.S. withdrawal. However, the tour also includes a representative of the General Federation of Iraqi Workers (GFIW). The GFIW (formerly IFTU) is sponsored by the Iraqi Communist Party (ICP) and former U.S.-installed Prime Minister Iyad Allawi. These parties not only oppose immediate U.S. withdrawal, but support Bush's "surge," and demand that the Iraqi puppet regime crush Iraqi resistance -- positions that are echoed by the GFIW.

Eyes Wide Open at Arlington West (tags)

Eyes Wide Open, the American Friends Service Committee’s widely-acclaimed exhibition on the human cost of the Iraq War joined Arlington West last Sunday. Each and every Sunday since February 15th 2004, this memorial is set up on the sand just north of the pier at Santa Monica Beach. We've been putting up this memorial as a way to acknowledge the costs and consequences of the addiction to war as an instrument of international policy. Similar to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., we've a weekly updated placard listing all the fallen American military personnel since the U.S. invaded and occupied Iraq to the present day. People read the names, ages, rank, hometown and circumstance of death, write their name on a piece of paper along with any thoughts or sentiments and attach this to any cross along with a flower. In addition, we've also a sign to acknowledge the fact that if we were to put up a cross for each Iraqi person killed the numbers of crosses would fill the entire beach. As we have no way of knowing the various faiths or philosophies of the many who have sacrificed their lives fighting for their illusions, the simplicity of a cross is used as a marker. Arlington West is a place to mourn, reflect, contemplate, grieve, and meditate, and to honor and acknowledge those who've lost their lives and to reflect upon the true cost of war.
