PHILIPPINES: Our Failed Labor-Export Policy (tags)
The impacts of disasters occurring in other parts of the world, from Libya to Japan, have perhaps been communicated more drastically to the Philippines than to other countries. Whether it is the tragic trilogy of earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear fallout in Japan or the civil war in Libya, external crises are swiftly transformed into internal crises for our country, as thousands of families are pushed into poverty and economic hardship when their breadwinners are dislocated and repatriated back to the Philippines, where jobs offering decent wages are scarce.
PHILIPPINES: New Economics for a New Administration (tags)
The dominant feature of the Arroyo administration was pervasive corruption, but its most destructive legacy in the long term will probably be its policy failures. The ascent to power of a new president, backed by a new Congress, provides the opportunity for a fundamental shift in policy in order to end poverty and re-launch the Philippines on the road to development.
Obama Supports Food Inc.'s World Domination and All We Get Is the White House Garden? (tags)
While Michele Obama took the needed steps in tearing out the White House lawn and planting an organic garden, her husband isn't so quick to drop the old pandering to biotechnology habits of big agribusiness corporations. With Obama's chosen staff of Tom Vilsack, Rajiv Shah, and Islam Siddiqui we have a continuation of the revolving door between corporate agribusiness, biotechnology and government regulators.
8.5-M US food aid to RP, Real Aid or Future Business Edge? (tags)
The United States on Monday announced it was giving $8.5 million (about P399 million) in food aid to the Philippines to help it recover from back-to-back storms that killed more than 900 people. But for the Pesante-USA, we ask is this real aid or just a Trojan horse for more benefits for the US in the future? Pesante said this comes at the heels of Tropical Storm “Ondoy” (international codename: Ketsana) last month triggered the worst flooding in Metro Manila in more than 40 years, and Tropical Storm “Pepeng” (Parma) early this month caused deadly landslides. The two storms killed 929 and flooded the homes of more than seven million people. The damage in agriculture alone has reached more than P21 billion. More than 25% of agriculture of the island of Luzon was destroyed in 27 provinces affected more than 20 million people. The twin disasters exposed the utter neglect and inutility of the US-Arroyo regime in handling the disasters and helping the people.

World says ‘No bloody thanks!’ to Australian sheep cruelty (tags)
World consumers are turning away in their droves from blood stained Australian wool. Horrific farm practices in Australia are being exposed thanks to the work of animal welfare groups including PETA and more recently the Swedish media. One of the current issues is the barbaric practice of muelsing, ripping the skin off the backside of live sheep to prevent flystrike which diminishes the export value of this woeful trade. At the same time we witness corruption of Australian government officials and a representative of Australian Wool Innovations, Kevin Craig.

Feinstein-Wyden Bill To Sell-Out National Forests (tags)
The final Feinstein-Wyden bill authorizing a massive timber giveaway under the guise of "fuel reduction" in our national forests is in. While lying to her constituents that the proposed bill would only target non-native species for fuel reduction, her final draft allows for millions of acres of timber to be logged. Furthermore, it exempts such projects from environmental review and other requirements specified in the National Environmental Policy Act.
