School must be different (tags)

Economization doesn't just affect cleaning. Schools as a whole are required to distinguish themselves in a competitive environment and to score points in school rankings through good "key figures," such as high school graduation rates. Yes, this is a blatant stress for everyone.

“The Aboriginal people are the custodians of their land and have a responsibility to their ancestors to maintain sovereign ties to their land—which is far deeper than a 'lifestyle choice,' which you're probably aware that the prime minister of Australia, Tony Abbott, so disgracefully described the connection to land.” – Jess Harlen

Flashback to 2001: President Assad to Prime Minister Blair:'Stop bombing Afghan civilians' (tags)

Reading the transcript of a joint press conference by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, which was held on the 25th day of the Anglo-American-led invasion of Afghanistan, makes it abundantly clear why another Anglo-American-led genocidal war had been launched against Syria nearly ten years later.

Flashback: President Assad: US seeks war on Iraq in order to redraw the map of Middle East (tags)

“We all know the masks that were used. At first the United States proposed the issue of the return of [weapons] inspectors [to Iraq]. Later, it spoke about the implementation of the UN and Security Council resolutions. It then spoke about the weapons of mass destruction. Later they said the problem lay in the regime itself. They then began to talk about democracy and human rights. Now they give the promise of development in Iraq and our region in general after this war. […] The [real] issue was that of taking control of the world and the region. The issue was one of oil and oil was one of the instruments used to control the world. The issue was one of re-drawing the map in the manner that suited them and, of course, suited Israel […]. The issue is one of destroying the infrastructure of Iraq” [Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, speech at the Arab League summit, Sharm el-Sheikh, 1 March 2003. This speech was delivered three weeks before the invasion of Iraq.]

Well If It Really Bothers You That Much (tags)

In the debate over what to do over illegal immigration here in the US, as with similar debates in other nations, the issue is often presented as having two main sides – those for it and those against it. Like most things in our busy fast paced lives we get the fifteen to thirty second version of the debate we catch on the news or whatever we have time for online, be it something linked to on Facebook, twitter or our favorite news aggregator. That typically gives us two sides of the issue to look at, as more in depth discussion is for people with more time on their hands quite often. But, in truth the issue is more complicated than just the two conclusions we are typically presented with – pro or against.

Prop 8 Struck Down by Federal Court (tags)

Yesterday (February 7, 2012) California proposition 8 voted on in the 2008 November 4th election stating that “Only marriage between a man and a woman will be recognized,” was overturned by the federal court. A victory for human rights, regardless if one is gay, straight, bisexual, anything in between or beyond. This battle between supporters and those opposed has been going on for over three years. Yet the fight for equality has been going on far longer than that.

Zenger’s vs. Fox on “Undocumented” vs. “Illegal” Immigrants (tags)

Does it look to you like he’s wearing a dress? That’s just one of the loonier accusations leveled against Zenger’s Newsmagazine associate editor Leo E. Laurence, J.D., shown being made up for one of his two recent appearances on Fox News. He was invited on “Fox and Friends” and “The O’Reilly Factor” to discuss his campaign to get the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) to recommend that immigrants in the U.S. without official papers be referred to as “undocumented” rather than “illegal.” What he got was a firestorm of bigoted, prejudiced and frequently ad hominem attacks from members of Fox’s core Right-wing audience; “idiot” was actually one of the less mean things he was called in the hundreds of e-mails that flooded in to his accounts after the shows.

“A Sea Change”: Film Shows What CO2 Is Doing to the Oceans (tags)

Barbara Ettinger’s film “A Sea Change,” shown at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in San Diego August 5, shows the other side of the climate change issue: what all that carbon dioxide is doing to the oceans, which absorb much of it after fossil-fuel burning and other human activities release it into the atmosphere. It turns into carbonic acid, which alters the pH of the sea and threatens plankton, coral and other small marine life crucially important to the life cycles of fish and marine mammals. “Imagine a world without fish,” says the publicity material for the film, which was followed at this screening by a discussion with two graduate students from Scripps Institute of Oceanography who expressed their frustration at the political opposition to taking climate change seriously.

Queer Democrats Can’t Agree on Marriage Strategy (tags)

The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club discussed whether to seek the repeal of Proposition 8 in 2010 or 2012 at its regular meeting September 24 — and turned out to be as divided on that topic as the rest of California’s Queer community. The two major statewide Queer organizations, Equality California and the Courage Campaign, have taken totally different tacks on the issue. The Courage Campaign not only favors 2010 but is already organizing for the earlier date, while Equality California’s leaders are convinced that 2010 is premature. Both the club’s invited panelists and its own members differed widely on whether to go in 2010 or 2012, and both proposals for the club to take action on the issue were voted down by wide margins.

Marriage Equality Follies (tags)

The split between California's two leading statewide Queer equality groups, the Courage Campaign and Equality California, over whether to seek the repeal of the anti-marriage Proposition 8 in 2010 or 2012 is criminally stupid and a disaster for the Queer community. The Courage Campaign is energetically moving to create “facts on the ground” to force the rest of the community to join it in a premature push for a 2010 ballot initiative that will almost certainly lose. A later initiative would give the community more time to organize and build support — but a unified effort for 2010 would be better than a continued division that might produce not one, but two, losing initiative campaigns.

A meditation on the recent death of H.E.A.L. Don’t Rush Back to the Ballot on Marriage (tags)

The Queer community in California is asking itself the wrong question in the current debate over whether to try to repeal Proposition 8 at the ballot box in 2010 or 2012. Either date is too early, Mark Gabrish Conlan argues in this editorial from the July 2009 Zenger’s Newsmagazine. Rather than launch a premature initiative drive we will likely lose, organizing around this issue needs to occur outside the electoral process and take the form of nonviolent direct action and public education efforts to convince a majority of Californians that denying legal marriage to same-sex couples is an intolerable form of discrimination.

Obama's Medical Marijuana Rhetoric Better Than His Actions (tags)

Despite the much-ballyhooed announcements from the Obama administration that they're going to stop prosecuting medical marijuana patients and providers as long as they abide by the laws of their states, little has changed, attorney Gerald Singleton and activist Dion Markgraaf told Activist San Diego at a meeting April 20. Patients and providers are still being raided, and the Justice Department disappointed medical marijuana advocates by recommending a five-year prison sentence for former Morro Bay dispensary operator Charles Lynch despite the request by the judge in the case for some legal ground to be more lenient.

CONTINUE THE FIGHT FOR EQUITY (tags)

The Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) reiterates its stand on the long-standing battle of Filipino- American veterans to claim what is due them in the name of justice and equity. We would like to emphasize that this movement, waged valiantly for 63 years by veterans who are in the twilight of their lives, is beyond personal and family interests. It has to be viewed as an issue of national interest and dignity. Sadly, there are a few Filipinos who see this struggle in an unsympathetic and twisted sense. The JFAV would like to correct this sentiment and ask them to instead look at the veterans’ issue on the light of respecting the rights of our war veterans and honoring our dignity as a country. Filipino- American veterans all over America have unanimously agreed to accept what the recently signed Stimulus Package of Pres. Barrack Obama has given them. But will continue with the struggle for equity as they did for so many years now.

On the History of Veterans Equity Struggle (tags)

A certain lawyer from San Francisco wrote his own version of the 63 years Filipino veterans struggle for equity and justice. Patterned after the waves in the history of Filipino migration to the United States, he ended the history with a glorious victory for the lump sum and so-called recognition and he called it“ the rescinding of the rescission act.” Like a typical American historian/academician he tried to simplify it in “ five different and distinct phases”

Audience Packs Library for Medical Marijuana Film (tags)

For many of the 300 people who packed the San Diego Public Library screening of "Waiting to Inhale," Jed Riffe's film on the medical marijuana issue, it's not just a movie but something they're living. The film begins with a raid on a medical marijuana growers' collective, and at least two members of the audience talked about having gone through similar raids from San Diego County law enforcement just days earlier. The audience was highly partisan but the film itself was surprisingly fair-minded and even-handed in its approach to the issue.

Prop. 8 and the Triumph of Theocracy (tags)

The passage of Proposition 8 proves that many American voters are committed to a basically theocratic view of government in which THEIR moral values and commitments should rule over others. It also means the Queer community needs to do some soul-searching over why people of color and others we considered natural allies voted for 8 in greater percentages than whites did, and whether "marriage" as a term carries too much religious baggage ever to win majority support for its legal extension to same-sex couples.

Racism, Immigration, and Profit (tags)

People are rightly confused about the issue of immigration -- it is a complex phenomenon and many things need to be considered. Often times, there seem to be equally compelling arguments and statistics on either side of the issue, creating even more confusion. Unfortunately, the immigration debate is often tinged or even marred by racism - usually subtly, sometimes openly. This feeling finds a receptive audience not because of prejudice, but out of fear. Indeed, racism cannot exist without fear. We believe that, at bottom, recent immigration-related topics -- from ballot measures to border fences -- directly or indirectly contain elements of racism and fear. Unraveling the basis for this fear, as well as those in charge of creating it, is essential if one is to make an informed decision on the immigration question. While doing this, we will attempt to uncover the deeper reasons that have created the atmosphere that has projected this issue on to center stage.

OBAMA'S VICTORY AND THE FILIPINO AMERICAN COMMUNITY (tags)

Many have been said about the historical significance of the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States Some says that the this is the apex of the four centuries, of African Americans enslavement, Jim Crow segregation, lynch mob terror and racist discrimination manifested in countless ways. Other says a final blow to racism against African Americans and other oppressed nationalities that has in reality been far more integral to so called American democracy. It will not suffice to say millions of people yearned for real change, for an end to war, unemployment, foreclosures, and more. The popular revolt expressed in millions of voters turning out, millions out in the streets waiting for the result of the election is an outpouring never seen before in American history. The sight of millions out in the streets of major cities like Washington DC, New York. Chicago and other areas for sure, send jitters to some of the ruling class who labeled Obama as “socia

CDIR Condemns Malaysia's expulsion plan Against Immigrants (tags)

The Coalition in Defense of Immigrant Rights (CDIR)-USA strongly condemns Malaysia’s plan to chase out tens of thousands of Filipino and Indonesian illegal immigrants. The CDIR-USA said that immigrants include a large number of asylum seekers and refugees who had fled from the conflict-ridden Mindanao region in the southern Philippines to Malaysia's eastern Sabah state on Borneo island. In addition, the CDIR noted that many are stateless people and migrants who had lived in Sabah for more than a decade, including children who now risk being expelled. The CDIR said that the simplistic and arbitrary action of mass crackdown by the federal government in addressing such a serious and complex issue will result into serious human rights and humanitarian crisis,"

Daniel Smith who, we have learned, has been released to the custody of the US Embassy upon orders of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. These officials have forgotten that they represent the Filipino people and not an American serviceman. Instead of deferring to the judiciary's interpretation of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), they have thwarted the legal import of the original provisions of the VFA and substituted their own meaning to justify the transfer of Smith's custody to the United States. This case is not only an issue of custody.

UPDATE ON BREAKING INTEL: 9/11 Now Exposed (tags)

It can now be reported that the reason why Rumsfeld and Rice ignored the July 10, 2001 warnings of George Tenet, then CIA Director and the U.S. State Dept. is that Bin Laden was not only in the UAE for dialysis treatment in June/July 2001; but was there on a secret mission on behalf of the U.S. NSA to sell Promis Software to the Emir of the UAE in Dubai. That’s right folks, Rumsfeld and Rice ignored these warnings because Bin Laden (never caught now dead) was still a CIA Agent (aka Tim Osman). Dennis Kucinich: Candidate of the left? (tags)

Kucinich opposed busing programs to integrate Cleveland schools. Before the issue had even taken hold locally, he made a point to introduce a resolution in the city council asking Congress to oppose busing as a means of integration. While Kucinich supported social and economic programs that would benefit the white immigrant neighborhoods that made up the majority of the district he represented, he disparaged similar improvements in Black neighborhoods. One of his campaign workers remarked in 1972 that Kucinich has "learned to play dirty pool…. It’s a racial issue. There are a lot of bigots in that district and someone has to represent them, let’s face it."9

Bush Is Cutting and Running Because Karl Rove Can Count (tags)

Nothing quite says "Blow off" like a George W. Bush promise. Pick an issue, any issue. Democratizing Iraq, liberating Afghanistan, preserving Medicare, protecting the environment, honoring free trade, funding education, caring for veterans, balancing the budget, any issue except those hallowed tax cuts -- on every one Bush called what seemed a determined play and promptly ran a misdirection. BushSpeak is more than amusing malapropisms or a looking glass of mental dishevelment. It is the most cynical politics ever practiced from the Oval Office.

Kennedy Had Ties To Vatican, Vatican Had Ties To CIA (tags)

A shocker article by Elise Soukup in the October 13th issue of "Newsweek" opens up a can of worms concerning the Kennedy's and the Vatican. She states that "In an election where JFK repeatedly campaigned on a strict separation of church and state, the letters from the former president's father--specifically his correspondence with the Vatican's top administrator, Count Enrico Galeazzi--are startling. In one, Joseph offers to act as a liaison between the Vatican and the CIA if John is elected." More in depth information can be found in "The Kennedys: America's Emerald Kings."

"If our words were called human, heavy, anarchic, beatific, right on, poetic, it would all just feel so right. Of what use are ideas and actions that avoid market rationality? Of what use are ideas that disallow their own institutionalization? Of what use are words that avoid capitalist functionalization? Of what use are ideas that are dangerous? The flippant rumor circulated by the Right that the Clinton staff stole, upon vacating the White House, all the G's and W's from the computers clearly reveals the link between the written word and power." - From the editors Forward, issue #2

Will NeoCons Drive The Decent From The GOP? (tags)

"We've watched while he used the tragedy of 911 and international terrorism to polarize the nation even further, vexing us with fears, while his mindless minions and yes-men from Ashcroft right down to commercial automatons like Fox's smarmy, imbecilic Sean Hannity, blaspheme the grand traditions and Constitutional institutions of this nation in order to wrestle everything from the flag to love of country to being holy relics of the GOP alone. "Programs?" Resist this License to Kill (tags)

A doctrine of pre-emptive war, together with a disingenuous and aggressive intention to declare facilities "dual-use", is a a licence to kill. We need to see the evidence that there were bio-chemical weapons, not conceivably "dual-use" or defunct programs. Given recent history, any claim that there was an active program would have to be subjected to the most intense scrutiny. Investigative committees should guard strictly against allowing the administration to morph "weapons" into "programs", otherwise a frightening precedent will be set.

The Federal Government Bully in State and Local Elections (tags)

Consider the medical marijuana debate.  Federal law currently prohibits the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) from using its huge advertising budget for partisan or political purposes.  In fact, a broader law prohibits federal agencies in general from using taxpayer dollars to influence the outcome of local elections.  The need for these laws is obvious if we hope to maintain any slight degree of federalism.

With them comes the true battleground and everyone should take notice. Neither of them are given to excess hyperbole or ad homonym attacks against those who differ with them politically ... What has transpired recently has not quite sunk in for most Americans. This isn't a left vs. right issue, though the right (and yes, indeed, many leftists) want it to be in order to further polarize the citizenry."

This is a flyer I've been passing out to hundreds of people where I am. I hope you will find a flyer of this type--broad demystification orientation--valuable enough to either use this same one or make one even better. The trick is, make one that may "bridge" with as many people as possible, instead of the usual "single issue" (usually topical) flyer we see all over. The beauty of this method is that it undermines all the "us vs. them" hysteria that most anti-war protesters are facing when they remain stuck in the single issue of the situation in the middle east.

Constitutional Limits of the Supreme Court (tags)

As a Constitutional scholar I became curious to see what role the Supreme Court would play in this election. I was stunned by the Court's activism in its recent decision to halt the manual recount of votes in Florida, so I decided to check up on the legitimacy of the Supreme Court to rule on political disputes. What I found was an obscure decision from 1849, in the case of Luther v. Borden.
